Waiting outside dressing rooms in Target and Kohl's with only my daughter's phone to entertain me, I zip over to the Libby app and pull down the first passable-looking manga that's new and currently available. And it's a retelling of Disney's Beauty and the Beast told exclusively from Belle's point of view.

I was a little shocked to see a super-creepy Mrs. Potts pop up, and then a bit later Belle and the Beast jumped into a book for some time travel. It was only then that I had an inkling that I was looking at an adaptation of the live-action remake instead of the original animated film. Flipping back, I found that was indeed laid out in some fine print I'd skipped over at the start of the book. I also saw that this was a new full-color edition of a book that was originally published back in 2017 in black-and-white. And that there is a companion volume told from the Beast's perspective.

Bottom line, it filled the time while I waited, but I'm not sure that time wouldn't have been better spent just staring at the wall, because this is a lifeless adaptation of a lifeless remake of an animated adaptation. It's just too far removed -- especially without the music -- from the version of Beauty and the Beast that I actually do like. I'm certainly not going to look for "The Beast's Tale." ( )

We see a glimpse of how Belle fell in love with the Beast, how she was able to connect with him. I like the graphics except for the inanimate objects like Mrs. Potts. Mrs. Potts looked especially scary. I read mine on the Kindle so there were no colors but I still appreciated it nonetheless. ( )

A beautiful full-color Beauty and the Beast manga!

I actually really loved that this story followed the live-action film rather than the animated film. It was a refreshing change. The one thing that I found a bit disappointing was how the story was pieced together. There were places it felt a little disjointed or lacking, like it skipped to a new scene before it should have.

Overall, a wonderful story for anyone that loves Beauty and the Beast!

This is a manga comic of the new Beauty and the Beast non-cartoon movie. I haven't seen the film yet, but I could definitely see changes in this graphic novel from the stories before it. Belle's background is filled in more concerning her parents, especially her mother. Also, she seems more intelligent and outgoing. She stands up for what she thinks is right, and she's the hero of the story. In most of the traditional Disney tales, the princess has to be saved by a prince, but Belle does most of the saving in these scenarios. Reading this was enjoyable for me.
