I'm not a big fan of biography in general, but I saw mother and son on Stephen Colbert and decided to give this try. You tend to think of rock stars of permanent rebellion against their families, but the one thing in common here is that all the mom's understood their kids were musical. I liked that the subject of each one of these were not all from one type of music, nor were all of them front men/women. Can read front to back or skim. The Foo Fighters are my favorite band, and probably in my enthusiasm to read more about them my brain glossed over the end of the title of the book. The part that explains what the book is about. I probably would have read it regardless, but I was not as interested in this book as I would have been otherwise. (Probably because, having come of age in the '90s, I stopped giving AF about new music after 2000 and don't know probably half of the musicians in this book.) This book consists of essays about the mothers of several famous musicians. Most of the essays could be summarized as "my kid was very energetic and such a handful and did poorly in school, then they started playing music and became famous." It was really... meh. In between the essays Virginia Grohl will talk about her son, Dave Grohl. I mean, she's his mom, and Dave Grohl is legit the coolest famous person ever (not that I've met him but I am going to assume he's awesome), but the essays were mostly sappy and "look how many awesome things I got to do and famous people I've gotten to meet because my son is so famous!" It got old. Recommended for die hard music fans. Otherwise... maybe skip this one. Dave Grohl's mom shares her stories of raising Dave, as well as the stories of other moms of famous musicians. Written in a journalistic style, Virginia Hanlon Grohl compares and contrasts the challenges of raising prodigious musical kids. As the mother of a 17-year-old percussionist, I was validated to learn the struggles I've faced are similar to those of other moms of musicians, particularly those related to school! This is a really nicely bound book with full color pictures throughout. I would recommend this to mothers of artistic and musical kids, as it was affirming to see how other parents have struggled with similar parenting issues. keine Rezensionen | Rezension hinzufügen
Drawing on interviews with such women as Verna Griffin, Dr. Dre's mother; Marianne Stipe, Michael Stipe of REM's mother; Janis Winehouse, Amy Winehouse's mother; Hester Diamond, Mike D of The Beastie Boys' mother; and many more, the mother of Foo Fighters front man Dave Grohl presents an exposé of what it's like to be a rock 'n' roll mom.
