This memoir provides insights into the public and private world of Jimmy Doolittle and his family and sheds light on the drives and motivation's of one of America's most influential and ambitious aviators. A memoir by the granddaughter of the master aviator brings personal insights into the public and private world of Jimmy Doolittle, one of America's most famous military heroes, and details the dramatic accomplishments of the influential and ambitious aviator.… (mehr)

Nicely done, good stories about Doolittle and Joe, her grandparents. Excellent insights into the woman, Joe, behind the great man, Jimmy Doolittle. She spent a lot of time, which she filled with all sorts of good works, while waiting for him to return from many flights to many places, obscure and well known. She and her two sons survived many moves and a few airplane crashes; only to lose her oldest son Jim Jr to suicide at age 31. ( )

Written by Jimmy Doolittle's grand-daughter, this book is a fairly well-written biography that highlights the personal side of Doolittle's life. It places significant focus on Joe Doolittle, Jimmy's wife, and the ways in which their relationship enabled Jimmy to accomplish so many things. Joe Doolittle was an amazing woman whose war-time efforts supporting women on the homefront and counseling returning soldiers are as impressive as her husband's wartime efforts.

As the previous reviewer mentioned, this would be a good supplmental biography to C.V. Glines's work. "Calculated Risk" is written very much in a personal style, with related vignettes comprising most of the chapters with limited narrative in between. While there is some detail on Joe Doolittles activities and service work, it is not in-depth research like one might find in a biography by a professional historian (which, in her defense, was not the author's intentions). It's an enjoyable read none-the-less. ( )

Nice supplemental bio of Gen. Doolittle, esp. for including personal insights and importance of his relationship with his wife, Joe.
