After Lord Wrexford and his friend Sheffield stumble upon a murder scene in a park, he becomes involved in another investigation and seeks Charlotte's assistance. Thanks to a generous friend, she's moved to a better location where she and her wards Raven and Hawk can live a little more safely. The murdered man was a well-bred man on the verge of patenting an engine that would be revolutionary for its time. I love the way the author makes street urchins useful in her plots. I loved the inclusion of mathematics in the plot. In this second book of the Wrexford & Sloane series, we learn more about Charlotte's past. Her circumstances have changed, but the banter and chemistry between Charlotte and the earl is still there. Naturally Raven and Hawk were back too, and it was nice to see them grow a bit. There were also some new characters who I hope to see again. And the mystery kept me guessing. My only quibble is that when books reveal the identity of a villain to a main character but initially withhold it from the reader, I am pulled out of the story, wondering if I'm picturing the scene correctly. Overall, this was a solid read, and I will definitely be continuing this series. Book 2 in the Wrexford & Sloane series was a much tighter plot and I thoroughly enjoyed the character development of the MC's, Charlotte and Wrexford. The cast of supporting participants in the story was delightful as we came to know the other people better from the first mystery. My sense is that the author will keep her narratives fresh, the individuals will develop naturally, and reader engagement will not dwindle. Penrose is excellent in maintaining the Regency societal vibe and in portraying the politics of the times. Highly recommended. 2.5 stars rounded up. I wanted to like this series, but I didn't care much for this one either. I didn't entirely take to either of the main characters, and maybe even disliked the main male character a bit. I didn't notice any real chemistry between them, which is fine, they don't have to be love interests, but suddenly in this book, especially near the end, they just act like of course it's been there all long... I'm not impressed so I'm just going to end this series here. I enjoy the Regency Period detail that forms this series mystery cum romance's background and environment. The characters, including the two young weasels, are evolving nicely and the mysteries are suitably intriguing. The scientifically exciting period provides beyond the usual motivations for criminal activity. I am looking forward to the next installment. period detail and I am growing to like relationship between Charlotte and Wrexford In the second Wrexford and Sloane mystery, Wrexford and Charlotte investigate the death of inventor Elihu Ashton who is about to patent a revolutionary new steam engine. keine Rezensionen | Rezension hinzufügen
