Pack structure – much like human hierarchies – can be painful and challenging for those who don’t fit in any of the traditional spots. In this story there is Joshua, an omega wolf who is a healer, and he has been rejected, abused, and mistreated by pretty much everyone in his birth pack all his life. Then there is Parker – he has had no issues like that, but he desperately wants to move up to be an enforcer, he just doesn’t seem to be able to do that. When they meet, Parker being told to babysit Joshua, all they expect is maybe friendship.

Joshua has had a tough life, with everyone in his old pack treating him badly, including biting. My heart broke for him – he is such a giving guy who only wants to help and be left in peace. He also has a few quite special talents. When his old alpha finally throws him away by sending him on a mission to help his cousin – who knows nothing about Joshua’s arrival – Joshua is afraid of everyone in the pack. He only comes out of his shell very slowly, and I can’t blame him!

Parker thinks being assigned as Joshua’s bodyguard is a little boring, but hopes it will lead to the promotion he has been working and waiting for. Parker hasn’t really got a fixed spot in the pack, and that is disconcerting to his wolf. But when he meets Joshua, he suddenly worries less about the hierarchy and more about this fascinating man… and getting Joshua to open up becomes Parker’s new mission.

Joshua and Parker are very sweet together. They think they might be great friends, and while Joshua can feel there might be more, he is too afraid to make a move. Things progress slowly at first, but when they figure things out? Hold on to your hats and make sure you have a cold drink handy.

If you like your shifter romances sweet and very, very hot, if you want to see two lonely men find their place in the pack after struggling for years, and if you’re looking for a read that is an excellent mix between sweet and scorching, then you will probably like this novella.
