I loved this book. Vincent Van Gogh' biography with the illustrations stylized as his brushwork! The illustrations are incredibly beautiful!! A reader has a chance to learn a lot about Van Gogh's life and passions, his condition, his ideas. I loved it. ( )

This book, for one, has extremely beautiful illustrations. The book shows the life of young Vincent Van Gogh, to when he paints the Starry Night in a mental institution in 1889. The book has very a good writing style that seems to just flow when reading it. It tells a story of young Vincent, who can't seem to ever sleep because he is always day dreaming of the many colors that make up the nighttime sky. It walks us through his life and his many jobs. The story tells of him working in his uncle's shop stocking paints dreaming of more to his life. It shows him leaving his job and trading it for traveling and learning art lessons from other great artists. The book takes you to a time where Vincent is in the mental institution never being able to sleep at night but in a way that is appropriate for the age group the author was trying to reach. Once he created the picture in the book, it shows the final masterpiece known as the "Starry Night" and a sentence that says, "shhhh Vincent is sleeping." To me this shows that he truly was able to finally sleep because he had created the very thing that drove him to greatness. ( )

This short picture book was packed with powerful language, illustrations, and allusions. For instance, each page started with the pharse “Vincent can’t sleep...” and soon the reader understands he had insomnia. There’s a page filled with his “many colored moods”, describing his progressive mental illness with the illustration. He goes on to paint the Starry Night in a mental institution in 1889. ( )

This book is beautifully written and illustrated. There's something poetic about the story, and there are some things that are heartbreaking, especially the last page of the story. This is a great, inspiring read. ( )
