An in-depth look at the constitution, examining history, famous court cases, and the way the constitution has been a guided force in the United States since its founding. Khizr Khan ties in his own experience as an immigrant and compares to like in Pakistan at points, particularly in light of the bill of rights.
An engaging read with full-text of the constitution included. ( )

This is a very kid-friendly explanation of the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution. Common Core and other state standards are leaning heavily towards the use of non-fiction in their curriculum. I would highly recommend using this book side-by-side in a Civics class or even in an English III class. Khizr Khan writes beautifully and simply about the foundation of the United States, the actual process of drafting and edition the document of the Constitution, then an explanation of the Constitution along with the Amendments made and their historical context. Additionally, Khan adds his own commentary in word bubbles, so we can distinguish his analysis from the explanation of the text. The additional of this commentary gives the Constitution, a dry document written by lawyers over 200 years ago, into a personable, relatable story. Khan juxtaposes this important "living document" to how he was treated growing up in Pakistan, making the importance of the document so much more powerful. ( )

This book was a perfectly effect entry for discussions of the Constitution. Khizr Khan is a lawyer and a member of the US Supreme Court BAR association (organization that licenses lawyers). He is also an immigrant from a police state and thus really appreciates civil rights, freedom of the press, and the various ways that the Constitution gave itself the power to evolve over time. The book is a series of thematic discussions of important aspects of the US Constitution's creation and how it works. It is aimed at a middle school audience and the language, tone, and added material to fill in gaps in the narrative is perfectly suitable for that age group. Mr. Khan ends the book by saying that everyone should read the Constitution and interpret it for themselves, and thus he includes a copy of the entire text of the US Constitution and the Declaration of Independence at the end of the book. This was a very good read. ( )
