From Donna Brazile, former DNC chair and legendary political operative, an explosive and revealing new look at the 2016 election: the first insider account of the Russian hacking of the DNC and the missteps by the Clinton campaign and Obama administration that enabled a Trump victory.
In the fallout of the Russian hacking of the Democratic National Committeeâ??and as chaos threatened to consume the party's conventionâ??Democrats turned to a familiar figure to right the ship: Donna Brazile. Known to millions from her frequent TV appearances, she was no stranger to high stakes and dirty opponents, and the longtime Democratic strategist had a reputation in Washington as a one-stop shop for fixing sticky problems.
What Brazile found at the DNC was unlike anything she had experienced beforeâ??and much worse than is commonly known. The party was beset by infighting, scandal, and hubris, while reeling from a brazen and wholly unprecedented attempt by a foreign power to influence the presidential election. Plus, its candidate, Hillary Clinton, faced an opponent who broke every rule in the political playbook.
Packed with never-before-reported revelations about what went down in 2016, Hacks is equal parts campaign thriller, memoir, and roadmap for the future. With Democrats now in the wilderness after this historic defeat, Hacks argues that staying silent about what went wrong helps no one. Interesting look at this election cycle. Lots of background between the DNC and president as well as presidential candidates. I think this honest look at this mess will cost her whatever allies she still possesses. None the less I agree with Ms Brazile that this is critical information.
The 2016 elections were unreal. Personally as well politically. I started as a staunch Democrat but my politics changed drastically during the election, not in relation to the candidates. ( )

I have only one major issue with this otherwise enlightening and fascinating look at one of the most unusual presidential campaigns in U.S. history. I feel Brazile spent too much time on the hacking angle and not enough time developing some other intriguing angles. Please don't misunderstand. I'm not minimizing the significance of the hacking. I simply believe it could have been adequately addressed in about half the number of pages. The book also gets a bit redundant in spots. For example, Brazile doesn't have to make the case a half-dozen times (if not more) that she doesn't recall writing an email that allegedly leaked questions from an upcoming debate to the Clinton campaign. Hitting on this angle three times -- or maybe only twice -- would have made the point. Having said that, I'm glad I committed the time to "Hacks." It definitely offers a revealing inside look at the botched Clinton campaign. ( )

A very realistic look from the eyes of the Chair of the DNC on the events during the time after the Convention through the Election of 2016. It is a horrendous story of mismanaged funds, lies or at least withheld truth, fear promoting to the point of life threats, some people trying very hard to do what seemed right to them, and just unimaginable exhaustion. It's hard to think of how things could have been any worse. This is the Chair's story. Others tell it differently. I'm thankful to have read this to get an inkling of how this sort of thing works and doesn't work. ( )

I’ve been searching for why and how information since the 2016 Presidential election results started to turn towards 45. This book adds a valuable dimension to the picture, including plenty of info about Russian hackers and cyber defense. Still, it’s highly readable and I absolutely recommend it for political history and memoir readers.

Why did she write this book? Partly to protect her reputation -- she swears up and down that she didn't slip Hillary C. any debate questions -- and partly to get even with the "arrogant white boys" at campaign headquarters. Best part is her account of Russian hacking of the DNC and the steps she took to recover from it.
