It seemed very promising but it never went anywhere. Many people complained about the cursing and there is indeed a lot but I actually don't think it was too much in general. Just the placement of "Fuck" in particular was sometimes totally out of place. It's in sentences that don't carry any meaning that justifies it. It's weird. I almost didn't notice it at all anymore by the end. My brain just filtered them out completely. The far bigger problem is that this book couldn't decide what it wanted to be. It tries to come across as an adult, dark and gritty retelling (Retelling is too strong a word here. Maybe "Alice in Wonderland themed" fits better here). But it ended up closer to straight-up erotica with an allice in wonderland kink or role-play or whatever. The amount of sex isn't actually excessive but there is nothing else going on in her mind except for some "horrible past memory" stuff. mild: It's hot naked men all the way. Constantly. I have no idea how these guys even managed to have their schlongs out so much without just going naked. One of them literally walks around with his pants down sometimes. And even in the rare moments, she isn't surrounded by semi-naked men she just won't shut up about the hot guys around her. In the entire book, there is a single guy she doesn't lust after that says something. I didn't check this diligently, maybe I missed one or two somewhere but even if I did this tells you a lot. It's just too much. (There are two females that have dialogue besides that one guy.) All these attempts to be dark and gritty feel out of place and forced especially towards the end. You can not have the MC constantly swoon after all the guys and be dark and gritty at the same time if your MC isn't pretty fucked up. If she enjoyed having sex covered in her enemies blood or something like that this could've worked as dark and gritty. But she is way too innocent to have her priorities fucked up like that, hormones or not. It's one of those cases: innocent mc, swooning after guys, dark and gritty. Pick two. I don't want to go as far as to say it's impossible to have all three but at least in this case it just didn't work. Took some time to get into it I did like this story, but it was a bit slow for what I wanted. Just so you know, there's no smut until 2/3 of the way in. I do like the take on the traditional Wonderland and that they acknowledge there is a book and this is a version of that story. The twins, Tee and Dee and my favorites. Allison is strong and doesn't immediately swoon for the guys which was cool. I feel like we're just getting into the plot when it ends, so hopefully next book will be really exciting. Don't expect a children's tale; these characters are nothing like their more innocent counterparts. This book contains: drugs, cursing, violence, sex ... and love found in the darkest shadows. Wow!! Is really all I can say.
This is really just a retelling of Alice in Wonderland but made with a modern-day teenager and hot as sin male characters. Allison-who-isn't-Alice is crushing on a guy, her sister drags her to a party; Allison talks to the guy, the guy is a prick to her. Then she gets to witness her crush getting shot in the face.
I don't know about you, but I'm not chasing after a guy that literally stood in front of me and shot someone in the face. I'll call 911 and give as much of a description as possible, but my butt is staying put!! But not Allison, she chases after the "White Rabbit" after calling 911 and ends up falling down the rabbit hole.
It just gets more twisted from there. Tweedledee and Tweedledum are introduced, naked mind you. They are sexy as sin also, and covered in tattoos, wearing Drink Me and Eat Me signs respectively. You can see where this is going right??
The book is good, and while the cussing is a bit much for me, I do like that there is an actual plot to the story and not a ton of sex. The sexual tension is there between all the characters, but it doesn't take anything away from the book. The witting is a tad repetitive for my taste, how many times do I need to know so and so is "dripping in ink"? But otherwise, a great read and I'll be continuing the series. ( )
