"Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz's Loaded is like a blast of fresh air. She is no fan of guns or of our absurdly permissive laws surrounding them. But she does not merely take the liberal side of the familiar debate."â??Adam Hochschild, The New York Review of Books

"If . . . anyone at all really wants to 'get to the root causes of gun violence in America,' they will need to start by coming to terms with even a fraction of what Loaded proposes."â??Los Angeles Review of Books

"Her analysis, erudite and unrelenting, exposes blind spots not just among conservatives, but, crucially, among liberals as well. . . . As a portrait of the deepest structures of American violence, Loaded is an indispensable book."â??The New Republic

With President Trump suggesting that teachers arm themselves, with the NRA portrayed as a group of "patriots" helping to Make America Great Again, with high school students across the country demanding a solution to the crisis, everyone in America needs to engage in the discussion about our future with an informed, historical perspective on the role of guns in our society. America is at a critical turning point. What is the future for our children?

Loaded: A Disarming History of the Second Amendment, is a deeply researchedâ??and deeply disturbingâ??history of guns and gun laws in the United States, from the original colonization of the country to the present. As historian and educator Dunbar-Ortiz explains, in order to understand the current obstacles to gun control, we must understand the history of U.S. guns, from their role in the "settling of America" and the early formation of the new nation, and continuing up to the present.

Praise for Loaded:

"Dunbar-Ortiz's argument will be disturbing and unfamiliar to most readers, but her evidence is significant and should not be ignored."â??Publishers Weekly

" . . . gun love is as American as apple pieâ??and that those guns have often been in the hands of a powerful white majority to subjugate minority natives, slaves, or others who might stand in the way of the broadest definition of Manifest Destiny."â??Kirkus Reviews

"Trigger warning! This is a superb and subtle book, not an intellectual safe space for confirming your preconceptionsâ??whatever those might beâ??but rather a deeply necessary provocation."â??Christian Parenti, author of Lockdown America: Police and Prisons in the Age of Crisis

An interesting book that contends that, far from being freak accidents or aberrations, guns have always been tied to violence, genocide, and white supremacy and that these are inveterate aspects of American history and culture. Without going into detail, this is a fresh and intriguing perspective on a debate we've grown all too familiar with, it's not a complete history of guns in America or the second amendment but rather it offers a framework for exploring and researching these subjects. I'm a fan of Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz. I've read a few of her other works and was looking forward to a well-researched history and takedown of the second amendment. That is not what this book is. To be honest, after having read this book (and it took me two months to force myself to finish) I'm still not sure what it is about. The book tells a fascinating history of racism against Indigenous people in the United States and how guns were used to uphold the federal policies of mass genocide, and once the "west" was settled (by white colonists, of course), how guns were used to uphold slavery and racism before, during, and after the Civil War.

But that narrative is only a small part of the book. The rest consists of a lot of other loosely-related narratives that are nominally related to guns. Honestly, I found myself skimming because this book was both uninteresting, not compelling, and not even remotely about what the title or blurb would have you believe.

I am still interested in reading a good history and takedown of the second amendment. Perhaps one day I'll find that book! ( )
