I received a copy of this novel from the publisher via NetGalley. 10 months ago psychotherapist Lorna had an affair with Andrew, a client, broke it off and moved to a different practice. In the present day, she is missing the adrenalin rush of the affair and keeping the secret and then Andrew tracks her down at her new practice and makes an appointment. There are also chapters from the perspective of Nikki, who is jealous of Lorna's relationship with the man she considers her own, and spies on her. I thought this was fairly well written, with some unexpected twists, but other than that it didn't really work for me. Lorna was so completely self-sabotaging and selfish that I could not really believe she was a therapist (or even really a mother - her affection for Freya never felt real). She was unlikeable, which wouldn't have been a problem except that none on the other main characters were likeable either. Andrew was very thinly portrayed and Mark didn't fare much better. The ending was a little bewildering and too much happened at once. It left a bad taste in my mouth. Zeige 2 von 2 keine Rezensionen | Rezension hinzufügen
Everything in Lorna's life runs like clockwork, from her 6 a.m. morning run to the strict 60-minute counselling sessions she gives. It's the only way she can deal with the terrible secret she carries. When a new client arrives for his first appointment, Lorna feels her perfect life unravel in a matter of seconds. It's Andrew, the man she's spent the last year desperately trying to forget. It seems he can't forget her either ... Against her better judgement she anonymously contacts him on a dating site. Messaging him could mean the end of her marriage and her career, but she needs to know if his motives are genuine. When Andrew is found dead in his home, grief quickly turns to fear when messages from him continue to arrive on Lorna's phone. Somebody knows her secret and wants to use it to destroy everything she has. Will she risk her family and her sanity to keep her secret? Will she risk her life ...? Everything spins out of control when Andrew contacts her again, determined to pick up where they left off. Almost unable to help herself, Lorna begins taking risks, putting all she holds dear in jeopardy. But then, Andrew is found dead and her world is truly turned upside down.
Told from varying points of view, this book held my attention fairly well. While it was often painful to read how Lorna made one bad choice after another, there were enough twists and turns that were just enough to keep me riveted to the story. The ending was a complete shocker.
Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC to review. ( )
