Goodhearted Farmer Falgu, who also appeared in Farmer Falgu Goes on a Trip and Farmer Falgu Goes to the Market, returns in this third picture-book devoted to his adventures. Setting out to the city of Allahabad, there to participate in the festival of Kumbh Mela, he is advised by different people in the village about the things he should do and see, from eating jalebis (a sweet treat) to looking for the processions of Sadhus (holy men). But when Farmer Falgu actually gets to the city, his many kind acts, which all involve helping others, prevent him from seeing and experiencing all that he wants. Is it too late? Or will his goodness be rewarded...? Happily, the answer to that question is a resounding yes, and Farmer Falgu ends up having a wonderful time indeed. Like its predecessors, I thought that Farmer Falgu Goes to the Kumbh Mela paired an engaging story from author Chitra Soundar with appealing artwork from illustrator Kanika Nair. As someone unfamiliar with the festival of Kumbh Mela before picking up the book, I appreciated the author's afterword, which gives more information about the subject. I also appreciated the lesson imparted here, about being kind to others, even when it means we must sacrifice something we desire. Recommended to anyone who has read and enjoyed the other Farmer Falgu stories, as well as to those looking for children's books with an Indian cultural setting and a Hindu religious background. "This hardcover picture book is the third in the much-loved Farmer Falgu series. It follows the kindhearted farmer as he journeys to the Kumbh Mela festival. Farmer Falgu always stops to lend a hand, and this story is a gentle reminder that nice guys don't always finish last. Kanika Nair's striking illustrations capture the colorful chaos and celebration that the Kumbh Mela is, in this charming and thoughtful tale written by Chitra Soundar."--Provided by publisher.
