I rarely give single star reviews, but in my opinion this was pretty poorly crafted all around. The dialog is trite, the mystery should have been exciting given the subject matter, but somehow it was just kinda made to feel tiresome. I didn't believe the characters were in love, and thought there was actually more proof that their affections were shallow than there was for the sentiments they claimed. There's no way you can hear your father talking about how his attempt to have someone killed and made to look like a carriage robbery failed, then arrange to meet with your "love" and learn they just survived that exact thing, and then just not mention that overheard conversation you specifically went there to tell them about. Further endangering their life! And then in spite of that confirmation that the person your father is trying to have murdered is the person you love so much, and also having overheard your father say that he's also selling you to an old man (what a pertinent conversation to randomly overhear amiright?? lol) you still adamantly defend him on principle or something when your love offers reasoned arguments why he believes he was involved in an earlier crime. 'What, *this paragon* do something shifty? I beg your pardon!' Much better to just fight about it and run away, still not telling the person you've loved since you were a child that they should, I don't know, maybe not turn their back around your father?? Or later, happen upon more extremely convenient proof of multiple crimes, (what are the odds really??) proving that the hero was correct to believe his father was set up for a crime that brought shame to his family and drove him to suicide, and that led to his brother being murdered- hand him the proof, and then run away in hurt when he actually wants to use that proof to clear his family's name or seek justice for their wrongful deaths?? She honestly thinks at one point that that shows he's as bad as other men who have acted out of selfishness, including her murdering cheat of a father. Wth? The logic was all over the place. The heroine was a ninny. Multiple plot holes. Bah. It would have made a decent first draft I think, and to be fair, the hero wasn't as bad as the heroine, (though he still didn't particularly impress me). Overall I'm pleased to have it over. ( )
