Forget perfect princesses, handsome princes, and "happily ever after." In this collection of thirteen flash-length fairy tale retellings, award-winning author Marie Brennan introduces you to a world of manipulative mirrors, treacherous pigs, and candy houses that will eat you right up. This was a short & creepy delectable read for me. It is full of short & creepy, & also a couple funny stories that sadly can get read all too fast. I recommend this to anyone who loves creepy fun fairytale-retellings! ( )

If you like fairy tales and you like really short reads you might like this work. However, I found them to be too short to really get into the story. You just get into the plot and it ends. These can be seen as good starts to more developed stories.

This is a bite-sized collection of bite-sized stories, most of which consist of not much more than a single scene or image, much like short poems. The quality of the stories is really excellent for what they are. The rapunzel-eqsue story in particular packed quite a wallop with it's stunning image and it has stuck with me for a long time. However, because these are just moments there are too few really constitute a collection. I have also read one of her previous collections of bite-sized stories which also included a few comments on each piece, and really feel that if you're going to make this a thing to wait until you have more of them and you have to add the commentary.

If any of these developed into a fully-formed thought I would be excited to read them; as it is, however, I am just left wanting so much more. ( )

Never After—an early reader’s review
Okay, so I love fairy tales, but every once in a while, a bitter twist can make you think of things in a different light. Never After is a bitter twist—not bad—just an out-of-the-box point of view that challenges the tidy endings everyone knows.
What if the evil step-mother was “poisoned” into thinking Snow White was out to get her? What if the reflection in the mirror wasn‘t merely a reflection? And just how lush were Snow White’s lips when her prince finally got there?
How exactly did the wolf get to granny? Do princesses in towers ever get depression? Was Beauty a catch or should the Beast have been a little more selective?
These, and other in-depth questions, shed light on the possibility that there may have been more to the stories and that like the originals that got “cleaned up” for the nursery aged crowd, fairy tales might have more than “happily ever after”s.
I never read “Flash” stories before and I liked them—the only draw back being that I read so quickly, I never really savored the unfamiliar flavors. On the other hand, they are very short enough to go back and linger over a rereading. ( )

A collection of very short fairy tales with a much darker story. These were interesting but just too short for me, I like a bit more detail. They're very dark and a more twisted version which I thought was good. ( )
