This was a fun fantasy world with some good ideas and interesting themes. Rayne is being trained by her Mum to be a Spell Breather, but doesn't enjoy the lessons or the responsibility. When her mum has to leave the village, things go wrong, and Rayne follows her to try and get her to put them right, but learns a lot on the way.

It had all the right elements, and the ideas of love and responsibility and how we deal with shared guilt were good, and the monsters were scary and horrible, and the spells were fun, and full of a love of words. But it just felt a bit dialled in in places, it never really gripped me. ( )
