So Zoe Blake Is fast becoming a go-to author for me. Her reads may be quick but I find they deliver every time. And Defying Him for me was no different. So this book has a little bit of everything and though low on angst and lacking major secondary characters it still packed a mega punch. The mystery and atmospheric unease throughout more than making up for the short length here and I really did enjoy this tale. So Phoebe is an investigative journalist working undercover as an English professor at the military academy at Buzzards Bay. lieutenant Colonel Michael Lawson / The Commander is the marine brought in by the Navy to act as head and flush out the murderer that is using the academy as a camouflage for there criminal actions. Sparks fly straight from the get-go between these two and their chemistry together was certainly sizzling hot. I can always rely on a Zoe Blake story to get my pulse raised, Defying him was no exception perhaps maybe a little less graphic than some of her other works but it was by no means low on the heat factor. I loved the overall mystery conveyed here and this was such an easy and at times, creepy read. Both Phoebe and Michael were extremely likeable individuals that were easy to relate to. My only major criticism here was an action of Michaels near the end. Shaking my head in utter disbelief here. That was definitely a bit of a brain fart moment. So despite that one issue, I did enjoy The rest of this book it was an enthralling quick read that I am happy to recommend. I was provided with an ARC of "Defying Him" By the author of which I have reviewed voluntary. All opinions expressed are entirely my own. Puller Academy has had 2 young women who have been ritually murdered. Journalist Phoebe Wilson's boss asks her to go undercover at the academy because he thinks that the Navy is hiding something. So she shows up as the new assistant professor in English, under the name Eustace Pringle.
When she gets there, she meets Marine Lieutenant Colonel Michael Lawson, who tells her to call him Commander. He was sent there by the board of directors so that he could get to the bottom of the murders and fix any security issues. When Pheobe gets there and he sees that she's a beautiful young woman who strongly resembles the murder victims, he does what he can to scare her away. The problem is that Phoebe is stubborn and she can smell a story from a mile away. She's done other undercover work and she knows that she can do this.
Michael and Phoebe have a strong attraction to each other immediately, and that's pretty hot. It's not an instalove situation, but a definite instalust. Frankly, a hot Marine in uniform? Especially if he's in dress blues? Yeah, I can't blame Pheobe at allllll for being all hot and bothered for him.
The first chapter of this book is spooky and creepy, and oh holy f@^&k, did it really set the mood for this whole book. I wasn't sure where it was going to go after that chapter, but it was awesome, and definitely, the best way to start out this book. I wish I could give this 100 stars, because that's how many it needs. ( )
