Yellowstone National Park was once home to an abundance of wild wolves--but park rangers killed the last of their kind in the 1920s. Decades later, the rangers brought them back, with the first wolves arriving from Canada in 1995. This is the incredible true story of one of those wolves. Wolf 8 struggles at first--he is smaller than the other pups, and often bullied--but soon he bonds with an alpha female whose mate was shot. An unusually young alpha male, barely a teenager in human years, Wolf 8 rises to the occasion, hunting skillfully, and even defending his family from the wolf who killed his father. But soon he faces a new opponent: his adopted son, who mates with a violent alpha female. Can Wolf 8 protect his valley without harming his prot??? Authored by a renowned wolf researcher and gifted storyteller, The Rise of Wolf 8 marks the beginning of an original and bold new trilogy, which will transform our view of wolves forever.… (mehr)

Learned a lot about both wolves and consequently dogs. It was interesting how different the personalities of the wolves are. It is mostly a summary of field notes that are loosely made into a narrative, purportedly about wolf 8, but really seemed to follow 21 as much if not more. I was kind of dreading finishing the book because I was worried that 21 was going to kill or fight 8, but thankfully that wasn't the case. I wish the wolves had names instead of numbers but that wasn't how they studied the wolves. I will probably read the sequels. ( )

McIntyre paints a very detailed picture of life in Yellowstone for the wolves who were relocated from Canada to reintroduce wild wolves into the park. Some of the details are fascinating, but others are quite repetitive and mundane. I appreciated the author's huge investment of time observing the wolves, and his choice to share their stories with the world. ( )

My least favorite of the series. It has more humans, especially McIntyre himself, than the sequels. It still provides good background and context, but the other books stand out better with their complete focus on the wolves. ( )

Rick McIntrye is a sweet nut. Basically every day he gets up well before dawn to watch wolves from early dawn until late dusk. During the day he talks to and guides tourists. By the end of his career he had 12,000 pages of meticulous notes and 100,000 wolf sightings. I read this in two days after taking a month to read a David Quammon work. Written at a smart 8th grade level it is fun to learn the antics of the wolves and their personalities but it got repetitive and I sped read the 2nd half. Like my wife said as I discussed the book, it would make a good Ted Talk. ( )

An excellent read for those truly enthusiastic about the natural world and wild wolves in particular. The author takes the reader through a very detailed - almost too detailed - description and analysis of the Yellowstone wolves immediately after their reintroduction to the park in 1995. He particularly focuses on 8 an 21 - two alpha males in separate packs. This is the first in a trilogy which I assume will follow the wolves up until the present. I look forward to reading each volume. ( )
