Let me first say that the cover guy is hot ( ) 2.75 stars This book is waaaaay too short for the amount of stuff in it. Character and plot development fall to the wayside in the author's rush to get to the insta-lu-er-love interest with over the top romantic nonsense for two people who've only known each other for a few days, but who are confessing life long devotion within the space of two weeks (I think this can happen in reality, but for the purposes of this review, it undermined the characters and the plot development). Also, it turns out Aaron, the MC, is a magical prodigy, learning magic spells in the space of a few days after discovering his abilities (and his supposed skepticism about magic and the supernatural get crumpled and tossed into the dust without a whimper from him or his friends). I had a hard time finishing reading this thing without rolling my eyes. I would love to read a new version of this story, which is so full of potential. With more time to develop the plot and characters and do some real world building this story could be truly spectacular. As it is, it's just a really fast, ridiculous, read. Aaron is all of a sudden thrown into a world of magic, and he takes to it very well. He finds an old spell book, and is able to do magic. Malakai finds Aaron because of the book but finds himself drawn to him. There is a bit of insta-love here, but it is explained in a believable way (for a paranormal type book anyway). Aaron and Malakai end up being soul mates and are able to take down a lot of bad guys who want to steal the book. It was an interesting and awesome story. We were able to get a great understanding of the magic and world, and this book felt more like the build up to the rest of the series.
