A meticulous observational study of the tree swallows which nested in the author's yard over several years. Typically Heinrichian in its mix of personal anecdote and experimental data. I am a bit in awe of how much time Heinrich was able to devote to watching his feathered neighbors, that's for sure! ( )
In the college ornithology course that sparked my interest in birds, I learned that tree swallows prefer white feathers to line their nests and will travel great distances to find them. I have retained this interesting tidbit for four decades, but Bernd Heinrich, author of 20--some books on birds and nature, needed to find out why....Truly a book for bird nerds, readers will admire the author's patience, unwavering focus, and determination at better understanding this familiar but fascinating species.
"The surprising, rich life of tree swallows in nesting season -- with Heinrich's beautiful illustrations and photographs -- by the acclaimed naturalist. Heinrich is sparked one early spring day by a question: Why does a pair of swallows in a nest-box close to his Maine cabin show an unvarying preference for white feathers -- not easily available nearby -- as nest lining? He notices, too, the extreme aggressiveness of 'his' swallows toward some other swallows of their own kind. And he wonders, given swallows' reputation for feistiness, at the extraordinary tameness and close contact he experiences with his nesting birds." -- Keine Bibliotheksbeschreibungen gefunden. |
