Many times, authors in writing their nonfiction Christian books, especially books which are devotionals or are transformational, take their readers on a journey to achieve a specific goal, chose a certain number of days/weeks to achieve the desired result. The number of days is usually rooted in scripture, for which I’ve got a tendency to point out the significance of that number biblically, which is why it appears that I'm not original in writing the beginning of my nonfiction Christian book reviews.

In this book by Sherry Jones, like any Christian authors who use a numerical period of time devoted to achieving the goal intention of their book, she has chosen to use number 21 in her book’s writing. If one reads the Bible from cover, they’ll ultimately find that this number [21] appears there at least twice. To begin with, according to the book of EXODUS, to escape their slavery by the Egyptians, the Israelites wound up performing 21 acts of rebellion. Then we’ve got JUDGES that contains a total of 21 books, thereby making the number 21 to become coupled with the concept of judgment.

When things happen in one’s life, individuals are usually in a rush to speak about that particular moment in their lives. Instead, they need to wait until what’s happening has come to an end to form a fresh idea of what to say about it. JOHN 18:2 [NKJV] tells us, “How long till you put an end to words? Gain understanding, and afterward, we will speak.”

Ms. Jones in her brief description for her book references PROVERBS 18:21 [NKJV] which reads: “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit.” Could this be her way of telling her readers what I’ve mentioned in the above about rushing to speak and life moments, we need to gain wisdom and understanding regarding a particular matter? The reason I’m saying this, I believe can be found in ECCLESIASTES 10:12 [NKJV] where we read: “The words of a wise man’s mouth are gracious, But the lips of a fool shall swallow him up;”

In each of her 21 devotions, the author begins with a specific scripture designed to tell her readers what is to follow. And like Jesus and his parables, Ms. Jones relates another chronological episode in her life and the thought process that went along with it. Ms. Jones then follows with an affirmation of what she had come to realize about that episode and a prayer to the Lord, asking for His guidance in becoming a better person from experiencing this same episode. The author culminates each day’s devotion by asking her readers to reflect on certain aspects of their lives, which might be similar to what she had experienced in that day’s devotional activity.

For wanting to improve the lives of her readers, as the voracious reviewer of nonfiction Christian books I’ve become, I don’t hesitate to give Ms. Jones 5 STARS for endeavor here. ( )
