Each of the exquisite twenty-three poems in this posthumous collection by Valerie Worth carefully distinguishes one animal from all other creatures and captures it in all of its wonderful singularity - from wasp to snake to wren. The way Worth perfectly illuminates the uniqueness of each animal in her precise and elegant free verse will delight both fans of her celebrated Small Poems and readers encountering her poetry for the first time. Breathtakingly rich cut-paper illustrations by Steve Jenkins provide a perfect counterpoint to Worth's spare style, and together poetry and picture bring every animal vividly to life.… (mehr)

"Snail: Only compare Our kitchens And bedrooms, Our lamps and Rugs and chairs, To the bare Stone spiral Of his one Unlighted Stairwell." Published after her death in 1994, Animal Poems pairs 23 of Valerie Worth's poems with Steve Jenkins' brilliant cut paper art. The poems are beautiful and sweet and in only a few words describe each animal just so. Children of all ages would enjoy this collection, although they would probably appeal more to the upper elementary set. A great collection to introduce poetry and an inspiration for the writing of it. ( )

I really enjoyed this book. I thought that all of the poems were fantastic. All of the poems were written about a different type of animal. This would be a great book to read to student before doing a science lesson on that particular animal. I also like that the poems have a realness to them, but still have that deep poetry flair that would get older students really discussing them. ( )

As Z said, "these poems are precious. Like gold of poetry world." Yup, they're exquisite. Just like the other Worth volumes we've had the pleasure of sharing. ( )

This is a beautifully illustrated collection of poems about wild animals. The poems are not for the very young. ( )
