The currents of history run deep and often unseen beneath the everyday ripple of events. But now and again the current rises to the surface, and the events of a single day shed an exceptionallight on the meaning of the past.Such events are the subject of Days that Changed The World. Some of the 50 days described here mark the end of an era; others the start of something new. All are remembered as powerful symbols of their time. The book begins nearly 2500 years ago on 28 September 480 years before the Christian Era, when the Athenian navy destroyed the Persian invasion fleet in the Bay of Salamis. Had the Persians won we might never have heard the names of Plato, Aristotle or Alexander, nor recognize the word democracy. Charting 50 such defining moments, concluding with 11 September 2001 and the destruction of New York's Twin Towers, Days that Changed The World is a unique and fascinating way to portray the story of world history.… (mehr)

A fantastic book which shows 50 different events which have shaped history. The author describes the event and then provides the background to what lead up to the event and the impact the event had on shaping the world as we know it today. ( )

A beautiful book, with 50 well chosen, although as the editor freely admits, subjectively chosen, days that inarguably changed the world.

But the writing was dry, and overly focused on battlefield/military statistics for my personal tastes; I quickly lost track of who did what to whom, and when they did it - especially since the writer(s) often went back and forth in time in an attempt to flesh out events.

I was also surprised by the poor editing; call me naive but I expected better from a Folio Society publication. Spaces missing between words and sentences that were incomplete or nonsensical did nothing to improve my opinion. It's not a bad read; it's just not as good as I'd hoped. ( )

This book provides a three-page summary of 50 distinct days that changed the course of history, starting in 480 B.C.E. and ending with the attack on the World Exchange Towers in 2001.

It is the non-fiction equivalent of a series of short stories. Each item is well presented and its significance clearly shown. The events were not linked together in any overall themes. The book is a sampler of history that could encourage readers to get more information on the event(s) that interest them. ( )
