Sarah Langan tells a cautionary tale of the suburbs-channeling Lianne Moriarty and Stephen King along with themes of mob mentality. An excellently written page-turner. My only complaint are too many false endings and philosophizing on the final pages. ( ) Thought provoking and freakish, this is a book that leaves you with a desire to rant! OMG, is this what suburbia is coming to? Maple Street is the picture of perfect suburban life where residents drive practical cars to practical jobs, the public schools are blue-ribbon, parents hover on corners discussing extracurricular activities or sports, and which colleges their kids will attend. But no one seems to have concerns about their mortgages or if their parents are sick, and if their marriages aren't happy, no one mentions it. All is an illusion of success so when the Wilde family moves in, they find themselves "the outsiders" since they have little to nothing in common with the other families. Not fitting in becomes increasingly harder to accept as they become targets of abuse. And when a sinkhole opens in a park nearby and a popular teen disappears, accusations against the Wildes spread, building a train wreck of rumors and leaving a sense of impending doom. This was a quick read with unique characters that you can't help but root for (the likeable characters, that is). It's a book that would be suitable for book clubs which could address issues of social mores and mob mentality. Definitely recommend reading! Really enjoyed this one! A bit futuristic, but it really all comes down to human nature and society - our need to look a certain way to a certain group (sometimes at all costs). This was a quick paced read with several pretty good twists. The characters were well developed (which I appreciate) and the writing style skipped around but more to add suspense so was easy to follow. I'm not sure how to rate this book because it is well written and the story definitely keeps you interested but man, it is dark and disturbing. It is a very depressing commentary of society that hits a little too close to home these day with people creating their own realities and others joining in regardless of the dire consequences to everyone involved. It is difficult to find likeable people and tolerate the mob mentality of the neighborhood. It will make you uncomfortable, angry and sad and I recommend you have a light, happy read next in line because you will need it after this one is done. This book is not a genre I would usually have picked to read but it was highly recommended. I didn’t enjoy it. Hopefully no one actually acts like the people in this book. I found it very unbelievable and appalled by everyone’s behavior. Reminded me of the Salem Witch Hunt - disturbing to witness the hysteria and actions of these neighbors.
Sarah Langan's Good Neighbors is one of the creepiest, most unnerving deconstructions of American suburbia I've ever read. Langan cuts to the heart of upper middle class lives like a skilled surgeon and exposes the rotten realities behind manicured lawns and perfect families, and the result is horrifically plausible.... Langan's unflinching prose obliterates suburbia's shiny veneer and makes Good Neighbors an uncomfortable read. As Charlie, the 13-year old son of the Walshes — who live two houses down from the Wildes — grumbles: "It's a lie. There is no perfect." Loveless marriages, spying on neighbors, lies, physical and psychological abuse, hidden crimes, pill addictions, mounting frustration, and dissatisfaction brew behind closed doors.... Good Neighbors shows how easily the discourse can go from disliking someone to spilling blood, and how those involved don't feel responsible as long as they're not alone: In this disquieting tale by three-time Bram Stoker Award winner Sarah Langan, neighbors have a falling-out amid a natural disaster, unleashing a frenzy of madness, malice and misunderstandings throughout a quiet Long Island community.... Langan weaves interviews and news clips into her tightly written, fast-paced narrative, conveying the infectious spread and mutation of stories goaded by media sensationalism and attention-seeking neighbors. As gossip and rumors swell and proliferate, the stakes grow exponentially as well. The richly complex main characters reveal flawed pasts and duplicitous natures as the story transforms into a witch hunt, trying to discern which of the suspects may be responsible for the child’s erratic behavior before she fell. Horrific claims pit the children against their parents and the adults against one another. Bram Stoker Award winner Langan (Audrey’s Door) crafts an incisive story about a seemingly pleasant neighborhood in 2027 Long Island, where the appearance of a massive sinkhole ratchets up local tensions.... This sharp, propulsive novel pulls off a maximalist variation on suburban gossip gone wrong. Distinguished horror writer Langan (Audrey’s Door, 2009) knows how to make that tension pop off the page. A creepy standout for readers who want an extra kick to their suburban dramas. A seemingly perfect suburb hides secrets and violence just beneath the surface.... The story itself is entertainingly absurd and over-the-top, but perhaps the most interesting part is the way Langan chooses to tell it. She intersperses the story with articles and interviews from years later referencing “the Maple Street Murders,” allowing not only a grim foreshadowing, but a slice of realistic true-crime obsession (as well as a glimpse into what the climate crisis may look like in the near future). An incredibly dark (and surprisingly fun) page-turner. AuszeichnungenBemerkenswerte Listen
"From three-time Bram Stoker-Award-winning novelist Sarah Langan comes a propulsive literary suburban noir set in near-future America during the hottest summer on record. Maple Street has a neighborly cul-de-sac, where a terrible secret tears a rift between two misfit moms who were once best friends. When innocent Shelly Schroeder falls down a sinkhole, it's one mom's word against the other's, in a court of public opinion that can end only in blood. Think Big Little Lies-if reimagined by Shirley Jackson"-- Keine Bibliotheksbeschreibungen gefunden. |
