She met him again by shooting him. After four seasons and unmarried because she is taller than most of her dance partners, Miss Phoebe Sauber receives the shocking news that she is being callously banished from her fathers estate because he is remarrying. Feeling betrayed by her father and by God, and wanting to escape her familys presence, she attends an archery tournament with her friends. But her perfect aim fails her, and her arrow hits a piece of paper held by Mr. Michael Coulton-Jones, whom she hasnt seen much in society in several years. But strangely, her arrow tears a section of the paper with a partial symbol that looks eerily familiar to her. He met her again while searching for a killer. Michael had quit his work as a spy for the Foreign Office when his brother was poisoned. His search for the murderer leads him to Apothecary Jack, a criminal underworld leader with a penchant for poisons, who is gathering a powerful army through an alchemical potion that can give men supernatural strength. But his path unexpectedly crosses again with Miss Sauber, who saves him from a trap laid by Jack. She and her Aunt Laura, Lady Wynwood, have found a vital connection to Apothecary Jack and the mysterious group he works for. Now Michael, who had vowed to never again allow civilians to come to harm, must work with a nobleman keeping dangerous secrets, a human lie detector, a chemist, a fellow former spy, and the one woman hes never allowed himself to get close to. And it is only this ragtag group that stands against a traitorous organization that could enable Napoleon to conquer the world. Wow, what a good book. Part 1 of an overall story that is spread over several books. A lot to take in with a lot of characters, including their relationship to each other in English society. Espionage, murder and people with special skills, all endearing in their own way. An especially dark threat to be out maneuvered for them and their country. Keeps you on your toes every moment. Very entertaining. Unconventional people who are quite real. I highly recommend this - you won't be bored!

I received this book free from the author and publisher. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

What I think you know:
Lady Wynwood’s Spies 1: Archer is the first book in a trilogy by Camille Elliot. It is a Christian Romantic Historical Suspense with a supernatural element. It is set in 1811 England.

What you might need to know:
This story ends in a cliffhanger , there will not be resolution to a major plot point until book three ( which is not out at the time of this review).

What I think about this book:
Elliot has written a very exciting and faced paced story that captured my imagination. Laura is very fascinating, I can’t imagine having the ability to know if someone is lying to me, that would be such a double edged sword. Phoebe who calls herself “the single most overlooked wallflower” is so much more than society sees her for. I love how she is strong and confident in her ability as an archer, but hate that she has not transferred that confidence to her life outside of archery. I hope that before the end of the book she will see herself with the value that God sees in her. Michael and Sol were mysterious and exciting. I also enjoyed the secondary characters like Keriah, Lissa, Clara and Calvin who had lots of spunk. I hope to see more of them in the next books. I loved this book and immediately wanted to read the next book in the series.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Celebrate Lit, this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own. ( )

Archer by Camille Elliot is the first book in her Lady Wynwood’s Spies serial. Miss Phoebe Sauber, an archery expert, and Mr. Michael Coulton-Jones, an agent for the British government, must work together to protect their country against a traitorous group bent on helping Napoleon conquer the world. The story started out a little slow for me. But once I got into the story it became a late-night, up too late kind of book! I really enjoyed Phoebe’s character. She seemed like such a real person. The supernatural twist doesn’t overwhelm the story just gives it another layer. I can’t wait for the next part.
DISCLAIMER: This is a serial novel. Each part has a complete story-line, but is not a stand-alone novel. It ends in a cliffhanger!

I received this book from Celebrate-Lit for my honest review. ( )

As I began reading this book, I quickly found myself relating to Miss Phoebe Sauber – perhaps because my relationship with my father remains nonexistent currently. This regency Christian romance includes plenty of action, unconventional behavior, and more to keep your interest. I love how Phoebe is an archer, it makes her come to life and helps give her life purpose. Being the oldest of two – with her younger sibling being a brother and the heir apparent, Phoebe must come to terms with her father’s impending marriage to a new woman with two daughters, the loss of her life’s purpose managing her father’s estate, and more.

As part 1 of a series, I definitely plan to read the rest of these books. I believe my favorite character would have to be Phoebe’s, Aunt Laura. The author portrayed her in ways that I could picture in my mind her actions while hearing her words. She definitely fails to keep to standard behaviors for a lady of this period. However, she loves her niece unconditionally and has a sense of adventure. Her butler Graham adds a spark of the traditional while mixing with unexpected behaviors sometimes. The two make the perfect mix.

If you desire to read only books that wrap up by the end of the book, then you may not want to read this one. Because it is a series, you will definitely need to read the rest of the books in the series, and I plan on doing exactly that. So check out this book for yourself.

The story is quite daunting at first for me. It is a Regency Historical Romantic Suspense and it does take a bit to figure out who the characters are. I did feel like I was overloaded with information and it frustrated me. I do like the time period and the setting in London though. Center stage is the charming Phoebe. I love her outspoken attitude and how she didn’t back down from anyone. I like how the author made Phoebe an archery expert. Her skills are sure to be the talk of the town. If she is ever in need of protecting herself, she only needs to turn to her skill.

There is plenty going on in the story to satisfy those who like mystery, danger and a dashing spy who must go to great lengths to accomplish his mission. He isn’t all that great as a spy when Phoebe catches on to him right away. Perhaps she needs to team up with him. Michael has retired but with the murder of his brother he has no choice but to join the group. They all seem to work well together. I found it interesting that during some fights, they didn’t always win. It shows them as vulnerable and makes them more realistic. I enjoy a story where the good guys never give up and support each other.

The author has warned us that there will be another book in this series, so be prepared for a cliffhanger. It motivates me to want to find out what happens next. The only thing I have to say is I hope it is not as wordy and has more action and suspense. I liked the story but like I said earlier it did feel like it was too much of character introduction that took up half the book.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion. ( )
