"Centring transgender women seeking stable, adult lives, A Dream of a Woman finds quiet truths in prairie high-rises and New York warehouses, and in freezing Canadian winters and drizzly Oregon days. In 'Hazel and Christopher,' two childhood friends reconnect as adults after one of them has transitioned. In 'Perfect Places,' a woman grapples with undesirability as she navigates fetish play with a man. In 'Couldn't Hear You Talk Anymore,' the narrator reflects on her tumultuous life and what might have been as she recalls tender moments with another trans woman. An ethereal meditation on partnership, sex, addiction, romance, groundedness, and love, the stories in A Dream of a Woman buzz with quiet intensity and the intimate complexities of being human."--… (mehr)

2021. Stories, but some quite long, about trans women, mostly in Manitoba, but sometimes in Eugene, Oregon, or Brooklyn . They are haunted by trauma, tend to be alcoholic, may be driven to sex work to get by. They are rarely happy, but sometimes are hopeful. They are rarely safe. They have lost family, friends, and lovers. It’s well-written and moving, probably realistic, but I wanted more for them. And it hurt that that didn’t feel possible. ( )

these stories! these characters! everyone is so flawed, but you can't help but feel for them! Casey Plett's writing is incredible. these characters feel so real and multifaceted. and i wished they were real people. they all felt like they could walk off the page and into my life. ( )

A Dream of a Woman is startling in its verisimilitude, in the way that its characters feel real, as if you're getting an inside look at real people in all their beautiful strangeness and awfulness and messiness. All of the stories focus on transgender women, and that focus is central to the lives of these characters, but the characters themselves don't treat that as remarkable at all: it's simple a fact of life for them, a fact that often results in great pain and hardship as they interact with the world, but also is the only way they can live authentic lives. This is a beautiful piece of writing. ( )
