It's friends-to-enemies-to-friends-to-lovers in this LGBTQIA+ Romance for fans of Red, White & Royal Blue and The Pros of Cons. Jasper Quigley is tired of being everyone's favorite sidekick. He wants to become the hero of his own life, but that's not going to happen if he agrees to help out his former best friend turned king of the jocks, Milo Lionetti. High school was miserable enough, thanks, and Jasper has no interest in dredging up painful memories of his old secret crush. But, Milo's got nowhere else to go. His life is spiraling out of control and he's looking to turn things back around. Step one? Replace the rare Odyssey cards he lost in an idiotic bet. Step two? Tell his ex-best-friend exactly how he feels-how he's always felt. Jasper may be reluctant to reopen old wounds, but he never could resist Milo. There's a catch, though: if Milo wants his help, he's going to have to pitch in to make the upcoming children's hospital charity ball the best ever. But, as the two don cosplay for the kids and hunt for rare cards, nostalgia for their lost friendship may turn into something even more lasting...… (mehr)

Jasper and Milo's story is great; I love that they find their way back to friendship and discover something more after many years apart. I love that Milo found the courage to speak his truth and remove the toxic people from his life. I am hoping that there will be a third book in this series. ( )

This was pretty light. He's lost a valuable collection of gamer cards and goes to old friend to help recover them. The guy he goes to for help used to have a big crush. ( )

I'm tired. all the tropes that I love just don't work for me in this book.
I feel the chemistry but tbh at this point I'm so tired of homophobia and coming out plots that I stop caring ( )

This is a continuation of the stories with a 'gaming" theme with the story of new characters with many visits by the characters in the first book, Conventionally Yours.. At what is probably his lowest point.... Milo is in trouble, so in spite of his misgivings about what he is about to do... he reaches out to Jasper, the boy he used to know and considered his best friend. I actually enjoyed this one a bit more than the first book although it felt very similar. I have read almost everything that Annabeth Albert has written and always loved them all...always feeling the characters were friends come to visit. the characters in this series are a bit different than her other M/M romances. They are a bit younger and mostly less experienced. The covers on the books are also somewhat misleading. They look more like young boys instead of young men in their early twenties. That could easily put some folks off before they even pick the books up. It's also a very soft venture into the gay world. Those that are a little uneasy about some of the other more “in your face” ventures will probably be very comfortable meeting Jasper and Milo. ( )

Out of Character is the second book in Annabeth Albert's True Colors series. Audiences first encounter Jasper, one of the main characters/narrators in Book 1 (Conventionally Yours). Despite this fact, I think you can read this as a standalone.

This was a really compelling audiobook. Hearing the two narrators was really cool as it provided a really great immersive experience. While I enjoyed the story, I felt that there was something missing. The characters seemed to be in their early twenties, yet there were a lot of moments where the book felt more YA in nature. Granted, the storyline does follow Jasper and Milo as the latter is coming to terms with owning his sexuality in a public manner. I think Albert wrote the characters well and it was an interesting novel overall. I didn't love it, but I definitely liked it. Reading this was a great way to spend an afternoon or evening.

Overall rating: 3/5

Out of Character will be available for purchase on July 15th. Be sure to add it to your Goodreads shelf and see where it's available to buy. Also, be sure to check out Annabeth Albert’s website!
