Mostly, I read books in about 2-3 days so after 4 days and just about half way through, I knew I wasn't going to finish this book. I think it is a novel that is rather like the emperor's new clothes. There is nothing subtle, nuanced or even hidden in this narrative - the whole book is a telling of why Putin is as he is dressed up with some traditional stories that lecture. There's nothing here that I haven't heard/read before so it isn't orignial and I didn't think it was particularly well written but that could just be the translation.

An extraordinary novel...You feel you're inside Putin's head. A story you must read if you want to understand what from here, seems incomprehensible.

Uiteraard is dit een belangwekkende roman, alleen al omdat het een treffend beeld schetst van Vladimir Poetin. De nieuwe ‘tsaar’ van Rusland wordt knap gekarakteriseerd en zowel zijn wereldbeeld als zijn wrede, doortastende karakter precies onder woorden gebracht. Da Empoli heeft zich duidelijk goed ingewerkt, en voor lezers die zich nog altijd afvroegen waarom Poetin doet wat hij doet zal dit wel een eye-opener zijn. Ik moet eerlijk zijn dat ik niet zoveel nieuw leerde, omdat ik de internationale actualiteit al nauw volgde. Bovendien vind ik de hele constructie van deze docu-fictie nogal geforceerd: Da Empoli gebruikt Vadim Baronov, een fictieve ex-raadgever van Poetin, om een doekje open te doen over het perfide karakter van het huidige bewind in het Kremlin. 240 pagina’s lang vertelt de man aan de auteur honderduit over alle interne en externe kuiperijen van Poetin en de kliek rond hem. En hij doet dat zogezegd omdat die auteur ook geïnteresseerd is in de vroegere Russische schrijver Zamyatin. Het is een biecht die op cruciale punten niet geloofwaardig overkomt: hoe Baronov aan de reputatie van nieuwe Raspoetin komt, bijvoorbeeld, en ook hoe die dan plots inziet hoe wreedaardig Poetin wel is en zich terugtrekt uit het openbare leven. Neen, zoals gezegd, interessant is dit boekje zeker, maar overtuigend zeker niet. ( )

At first, the narrative here seems a little strange. Where is the author taking us? But then the narrator shifts and it becomes an explication from Putinology and Kremlinogy from the inside--or so it feels, quite brilliantly. By the time the story gets to the last 25%, close to but not quite caught up with the present, there is the reality--the horrifying reality--of how closely this work of fiction can be mapped to the events of the world we have lived through.
