"When thirty-four-year-old Ms. Shibata gets a new job in Tokyo to escape sexual harassment at her old one, she finds that, as the only woman at her new workplace-a company that manufactures cardboard tubes-she is expected to do all the menial tasks. One day she announces that she can't clear away her colleagues' dirty cups-because she's pregnant and the smell nauseates her. The only thing is . . . Ms. Shibata is not pregnant. Pregnant Ms. Shibata doesn't have to serve coffee to anyone. Pregnant Ms. Shibata isn't forced to work overtime. Pregnant Ms. Shibata rests, watches TV, takes long baths, and even joins an aerobics class for expectant mothers. But pregnant Ms. Shibata also has a nine-month ruse to keep up. Helped along by towel-stuffed shirts and a diary app on which she can log every stage of her "pregnancy," she feels prepared to play the game for the long haul. Before long, though, the hoax becomes all-absorbing, and the boundary between her lie and her life begins to dissolve. A surreal and wryly humorous cultural critique, Diary of a Void is bound to become a landmark in feminist world literature"--… (mehr)

A wonderfully written mix of social commentary, magic realism, and loneliness. There are so many witty, subtle twists and turns that the whole book keeps the reader on their toes without veering into straight-on suspense. Definitely the best book about a fake pregnancy I've ever read. ( )

This story of a woman who fakes a pregnancy is filled with a lot of really funny observations.

I didn't realize until the end (after reading the ad-copy) that this book was supposedly touching on mental illness; it made a lot more sense after that, but there were still several parts where I wished the reader was given more clarity about what was real and what was delusional.

Note: There's a small amount of profanity, including God's name misused a couple of times. ( )

This was such a fascinating read. Emi Yagi is a master of blending reality and the dreams of Shibatas dreams to a point were I found myself questioning wether this pregnancy was real or not quite often.
Her writing style is unite and well, quite. I like to think, that the quiet that you feel when reading this book is representative of the urban alienation and loneliness the protagonist goes through, the subtle way she just seems to fall out of life. And that is real mastery. To feel the way the protagonist does, to have entire worlds of emotions warp around you while reading.

Would definitely recommend and yeah. I liked it. ( )

Had me all internally unsettled about what happened after finishing, and then a little time went by and I realized I kept thinking about it because it is good stuff and it had worked on me! ( )
