"Filled with vivid details, shocking truths, and two sly, strong women who bring panache and humor to every scene. I'm simply in awe of the masterful, magical way Lauren Willig makes history come alive." ?? Fiona Davis, New York Times bestselling author of The Magnolia Place

"A winning epic of war and friendship. Readers will devour this riveting tale."??Publishers Weekly (starred review)

From New York Times bestselling author Lauren Willig: a dramatic coming-of-age story with a dual timeline and a single heroine??a bold and adventuring young woman who finds herself caught up in two very different wars on both sides of the Atlantic.

September 1896: An aspiring archaeologist, Smith College graduate Betsy Hayes travels to Athens, desperate to break into the male-dominated field of excavation. In the midst of the heat and dust of Greece she finds an unlikely ally in Charles, Baron de Robecourt, one of the few men who takes her academic passion seriously. But when a simmering conflict between Greece and Turkey erupts into open warfare, Betsy throws herself into the conflict as a nurse, not knowing that the decision will change her life forever??and cause a deep and painful rift with her oldest friend, Ava.

June 1898: Betsy has sworn off war nursing??but when she gets the word that her estranged friend Ava is headed to Cuba with Clara Barton and the Red Cross to patch up the wounded in the Spanish-American War, Betsy determines to stop her the only way she knows how: by joining in her place. Battling heat, disease, and her own demons, Betsy follows Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders straight to the heart of the fighting, where she is forced to confront her greatest fears to save both old friends and new....

Set during an electrifying era of nation-building, idealism, and upheaval, Two Wars and a Wedding is the tale of two remarkable women striving to make their place in a man's world??an unforgettable saga of friendship, love, and fighting for what is right.

Smith College graduate Betsy Hayes aspires to be an archaeologist. She travels to Greece but discovers the men in charge of the digs do not want to allow women to do actual excavation work. They want her to perform a role more like a librarian or such. She fails the Red Cross course to become a nurse in the Greco-Turkish War of 1897, but they need people so badly that she is able to work anyway. Her best friend now wants to enlist in the Spanish-American War as a Red Cross nurse to Cuba, but Betsy tries to take her place. She travels from Greece to Tampa, Florida where she talks her way into a Red Cross unit about to depart for Cuba. She finds the conditions deplorable and the treatment of injured soldiers abominable. There's a little romance thrown in. We see what a difference Betsy was able to make. I'll let you read the novel to see if she is able to achiever her dream of becoming an archaeologist. Willig's book is based on a true story, but she does take liberties which she outlines at the end. I've come to love Willig's books because she does a good bit of research about the topic. ( )

I enjoyed this book very much! Betsy was a true heroine! She valiantly endured hardships to bring health and peace to those in her care. ( )

I couldn’t resist this title and it was refreshing that the two wars were not the usual ones I’ve often read about. Aspiring archaeologist and Smith College graduate Betsy Hayes ends up providing nursing skills in both the 1896 Greco-Turkish War and the 1898 Spanish-American War.

What made this dual timeline book so readable was Betsy. She is the epitome of “spunky” as well as independent and opinionated. Betsy’s character was influenced by Harriet Boyd Hawes, the real-life founder of Smith College Relief Unit. She was an archaeologist, humanitarian, and occasional war nurse. Author Lauren Willig says: “What would make a dedicated classicist drop her career to run to Florida to nurse in the Spanish-American War? This book is the answer to that question.”

Surprisingly, even though not my usual go-to subject, I couldn’t put this down. I gave myself a lot of credit for reading a book about not one but two wars with lots of medical depiction and injury description. I usually avoid these topics, yet nothing was overly graphic or luridly disturbing. Just realistic enough to make me feel like I was right in the midst of the battles and hospitals.

I think it’s important to know that the author says, “While this book is set around two conflicts that shaped the fates of nations, it became very clear to me while writing it that this was neither a book about Greece nor a book about Cuba. On the contrary, it is a book about Americans in Greece and Cuba, which is a very different thing.”

And I will add that it’s a brilliant representation of historical fiction. Both a story about the progress that the nursing profession made in the late 1890s as well as the personal story of an amazing and idealistic woman. You’ll find adventure, romance, friendship, and danger in this entertaining novel of a courageous and strong-minded heroine. ( )

TWO WARS AND A WEDDING by Lauren Willig
So, neither of the two wars did I know much about before I read this. I don’t know a lot more after finishing the book. Greece and Turkey in 1897 got into pitched battles over I’m not quite sure what and Betsy Hayes, Smith College graduate, decided she needed to be a nurse and save lives. Unfortunately, she was NOT a nurse and, in fact, she knew little about nursing. But Betsy was determined to do whatever SHE wanted, and so she cajoled her way into a nursing cohort. It was nothing like she imagined. A year later, the United States and Spain got into a bitter war. And Betsy talked her way into a Red Cross nursing unit. Her reasoning is complicated. (Read the book.)
You will learn a lot about nursing in war zones during the 1890’s. Willig’s research is flawless and detailed. Nurses, especially women nurses, were considered little more than letter writers for the dying and water carriers for the critically wounded. The characters are believable, the situations are only too true – and horrifying. Clara Barton is melded seamlessly into the story.
Oh yes, the wedding. There is one. Again, read the book. It will keep your interest and you will know more about two half-forgotten wars and also a bit about archeology and digs and the treatment of women especially educated women, in the 1890’s.

There isn't much in the way of historical fiction about the Spanish-American War (so far as I know), so this was quite informative as well as entertaining. I didn't even always like Betsy all that much for a while, but I found myself rooting for her by the end. ( )
