Nightwing, Vol. 1: Leaping Into the Light collections issues 78-83 from the fourth volume of Nightwing’s self-titled series written by Tom Taylor with pencils by Bruno Redondo, Rick Leonardi, and Neil Edwards, inks by Redondo, Andy Lanning, and Scott Hanna, colors by Adriano Lucas, and letters by Wes Abbott. The story begins shortly after Dick Grayson recovered from memory loss and soon after Alfred’s death. Things are changing in Blüdhaven, with Dick inheriting Alfred’s estate and having to decide how best to use it for the people of his city. Meanwhile, Blockbuster ensures that Melinda Zucco becomes the new mayor. There’s also a new killer on the loose and he takes people’s hearts as trophies. Dick must learn all he can about Heartless while investigating Mayor Zucco, who turns out to be his half-sister.

Tom Taylor’s story is Nightwing at his best. It introduces some new elements to Dick’s life and sets the stage for them to play out. Bruno Redondo, Rick Leonardi, and Neil Edwards’ artwork perfectly pairs with Taylor’s writing while capturing the dynamism of Dick Grayson’s life as Nightwing. Adriano Lucas’ colors are gorgeous and help make every page pop. This is a great place for fans of Dick Grayson or Nightwing to jump into his story. ( )
