In the deep future beyond the burn line of the Anthropocene and the extinction of humanity, the city states of an intelligent species of bear have fallen to a mind-wrecking plague. The bears' former slaves, a peaceable, industrious and endlessly curious people, believe that they have inherited the bounty and beauty of their beloved Mother Earth. But are they alone? After the death of his master, a famous scholar, Pilgrim Saltmire vows to complete their research into sightings of so-called visitors and their sky craft. To discover if they are a mass delusion created by the stresses of an industrial revolution, or if they are real - a remnant population of bears which survived the plague, or another, unknown intelligent species. Risking his reputation and his life, Pilgrim's search for the truth takes him from his comfortable home in the shadow of a great library to his tribe's former home on the chilly coast of the far south, and the gathering of a dangerous cult in the high desert. Whether or not the visitors are real, one thing is certain. Pilgrim's world and everything he thought he knew about his people's history will be utterly changed.… (mehr)

Aquila: In particular Pilgrim's story is reminiscent of The Potter of Bones in Hwarhath Stories.

Aquila: The similarity here is obvious, uplifted animals replacing humanity.

Aquila: The decision at the end of Beyond the Burn Line is one that comes up a lot in Cherryh's books, but the Chanur books seem like the best matched read.

Paul McAuley is a world-builder, and in creating Beyond the Burn Line, I think he has been inspired by the animal uplift stories of David Brin and Adrian Tchaikovsky. The story is set on a far future earth in which all that seems to be left of human civilization are some burned patches that one thinks are the result of an ancient nuclear war. At one point, bears achieved sentience, but their civilization also collapsed when a plague drove them back to a feral state. Now a third species has evolved, and one scholar is exploring some of the evidence for recent UFO sightings. The plot involves a complex mystery that, fair warning, still has some threads dangling at the end. Beyond the Burn Line is billed as a stand-alone novel, but McAuley has left plenty of room to turn it into a series if he wants to. I appreciate his patient storytelling. Some reviewers found it slow, but it kept me involved all the way through. 4 stars. ( )

A sort of parts collection of familiar themes: Planet of the Apes, post apocalypse, and evil computer on a spaceship; but lots of unique things going on here too. We start out in the first half only guessing what's going on (we're not even sure of the physical form of our characters). We get only bits and pieces from some successor to humanity, after some calamity of global warming and/or the eruption of Yellowstone. It becomes clear with reveals, which can be guessed, and we do get an info dump (unlike many folks, I should note, I am not anti-info-dump) way into the 2nd section, which is a distinct narrative. What's really notable to me about the book, in addition to the unique ideas or combination of ideas, is a recurring theme of cults, conspiracy theories, and who or what is really trustworthy. Who is skewing the truth? There's even a charismatic cool-aid cult leader along the way. A theme very apropos for out times. Kudos to McAuley for working this in, it made the book for me. Although I'm a little ambiguous about the ending, which is weak with a pointless cliffhanger, but, you read it: recommend.
