Primarily from its title you can be definite we explored little chunks of information about the solar system and everthung discovered there. This introducftion to the solar system will set the stage to dig deeper into art, history and math. each page offers great photographs of planets, vehicles and people. Some illustrations are drawings, but are few. This book lacks diversity however it offers activities and is well organized for a parent or teacher to answer questions. ( )

This book provides readers with information about the solar system, including the sun, planets, gravity, outer space and the moon. The illustrations are actually photos from many sources, including National Geographic and NASA. Design of both the cover and the pictures are attractive and appealing. The language used to discuss each topic is child-appropriate and vibrant, full of descriptive words that work with the pictures to 'paint' a vivid picture for the readers. It provides many little known facts about each planet and uses fascinating comparisons to demonstrate how the planets differ.
Media: photographs, watercolor, pen, colored pencils
Genre: Informational book (accurate information about the solar system, reports about the real world ("meteors that land on Earth are called meteorites. The heaviest known meteorite is Hoba West.") ( )

Solar System, by Dr. Mike Goldsmith is a great tool for an elementary teacher. This book captures the reader’s attention with its busy pages full of interesting pictures. There is a brief description of each planet with interesting facts thrown in. There is also information on our moon as well as other interesting subjects, towards the back of the book there are two fun activities for children to use as well. If a teacher were using this book she could use the vocabulary words at the bottom of every page and incorporate them into other subject areas. This book is part of a set belonging to Kingfisher Young Knowledge (KFYK). There are other books on different topics that were just as interesting as this one and could be used for different science lessons. ( )

Kingfishers Young Knowledge’s Solar System is exactly what one should expect of an elementary-level book on the solar system: a review of the planets and space as it is known from earth, including a touch or two of fun topics like Martians. Text is separated into small paragraphs all set off by headings, and similar blurbs are put together on themed pages-each planet gets at least one, and the earth and its moon get a few extra. The layout requires readers to pay attention to the entire page, pulling in all of the drawings and photographs within. The order of things (the solar system as a whole, then movement from the sun outward before tidying up with “space extras” such as asteroids and NASA) flows quite logically and a short index in the back can direct readers to specific topics. Highly recommended for youth non-fiction collections in public or elementary school libraries. ( )
