Sugar Pie Snuggles is the seventh book in the ‘Bake Sale Bachelors Season Two’ series. It stars Denis, an ex-hockey player, and Rylan, a teacher. The story is told in first person from Denis and Rylan’s povs. This is a second chances story.

I’ve read many books by this author team and this one is unfortunately, not one of their better ones. One thing a plot needs is tension, aka conflict, and there isn’t any in this. The tiny bit there is is about Denis who has to deal with this bad knee and the run-around from doctors who say they can heal him but are just leading him on. Other than that, there is absolutely no conflict between the characters. Nothing happens and it’s all rather bland, which makes the story flat. It comes down to Denis has to quit hockey because of a terrible injury to his knee. He returns to his home town and reunites with his old boyfriend who forgives him right off the bat for leaving him behind and going off to become famous. They get back together immediately, have sex and the rest of the story is nothing out of the ordinary. Just what they do each day, go here go there, talk to people. There’s nothing that happens that’s interesting. I was bored as soon as Rylan forgave Denis.

As to the characters, Denis is in my opinion a selfish Alpha. He pretty much just thinks of himself and what he wants. He would’ve never returned to the town to see Rylan again because he loved hockey more. He didn’t even try to make their relationship work which is absurd since if anyone follows hockey, you know that the players have relationships, get married and have families all the time. Their families stay home while they’re on the road and some games the family attends. The idea that Denis didn’t have time for Rylan merely meant he didn’t want to bother having Rylan along. I didn’t like Denis’ character. Rylan was the typical self-sacrificing omega; in other words, a martyr, and I really don’t like characters like these even though he was a nice person, aka a Marty Stu character.

This story felt more rushed than other books I’ve read by this writing team. I realize I read an ARC, but in this one, the sentences seemed more fragmented than usual and there was less depth to the characters so that I didn’t feel anything for them as a couple. There were also a couple instances of rapid pov shift within a couple sentences. I’m hoping they fixed it before publishing the story.

I do have a question that I’ve been wondering about. How is it that when the couples have sex, pretty much in all of this writing teams books, they never use birth control or think about, ‘Let’s wait to have kids”? Instead, they always get knocked up immediately. It’s like the whole purpose to get together is getting knotted, and having sex to have babies. They’re always surprised when they get pregnant too. I wish situations like this were more realistic. Not everyone pops out babies as soon as they become a couple. It’s not the end all and be all in life. What about a couple that chooses to adopt instead of having their own?

Overall Sugar Pie Snuggles is one of my least liked stories by this writing team. There are too many errors with the writing and the characters and plot are flat, so I can only give this story, 2 Stars.
