There are creatures lurking in our world. Obscure creatures long relegated to myth and legend. They have been sighted by a lucky-or unlucky-few, some have even been photographed, but their existence remains unproven and unrecognized by the scientific community. These creatures, long thought gone, have somehow survived; creatures from our nightmares haunting the dark places. They swim in our lakes and bays, they soar the night skies, they hunt in the woods. Some are from our past, and some from other worlds, and others have always been with us-watching us, fearing us, hunting us.These are the cryptids, and Systema Paradoxa tells their tales.***Despite a childhood plagued by death, Daniel Smith has built a good life for himself, though no one would believe it if he told them. Working for the Watchers-a covert organization tasked with keeping cryptids a secret from the common man-everything he has accomplished threatens to crumble when his charge goes rogue, leaving a trail of death and blood and cryptid sightings in his wake. When the rogue invades another cryptid's turf, Daniel must confront his past to save his future, but will any of them survive the encounter?… (mehr)

An absolutely delightful story about Stan, the Lizard Man and those whose lives he impacts on (mostly negatively - mostly unintentionally). Stan had been living happily in his swamp mostly unnoticed by humankind. One day, when campers leave food unattended, Stan discovers the joys of the variety of human food and decides to venture out of the swamp. In come the Wranglers, a secret group of rangers who look after those species like Stan (think Yetis, Shapeshifters and alike) so that they can live in peace without Human interference. Wranlger, Daniel, aided (occasionally) by his adopted catwamp mother, steps in to save the day. Very entertaining and great fun. ( )

Thank you LibraryThing for allowing me to win this book. It was a rather interesting book and it started right off the bat. I am a big fan of cryptids so I had a fun time reading about the story created with the cat-woman and the lizard-man. Plus the hints at the others was a great touch. So if you do enjoy fun little stories of crypitds and their folklore you will more than likely enjoy this one for sure! ( )

I received this book complimentary from Library Thing in exchange for an honest review. Whether you like and believe in cryptids or you don't this book will keep you excitedly turning the pages until it's surprising end! The story was so much more than I expected. Yes it has cryptids but not like the ones were all used to hearing about. These captivating creatures are unlike what you hear on you tube videos or see on the covers of gossip mags while waiting in line at the grocery store!. The author takes an actual "factual" encounter of which there are many going back centuries, and weaves around it a tapestry of Cherokee legend, modern day technology and a group of "good guys" out to protect these rare and endangered beings. Many Things smack of conspiracy and truth in this tale with shape-shifters, lizard men and the "unscaled" but it's up to the reader to decide what could be myth and what the truth may be. I thoroughly enjoyed this twisty, shifty, creature feature. Even the artwork at the end didn't disappoint! You don't have to believe to enjoy this suspenseful, quizzical read. I know I will be seeking out the rest of the volumes in this very cool, unique, series of books. Each can be read as a stand alone. I gobbled up each and every page! I highly recommend this book. Thank you LTER for allowing me to review. ( )

An interesting book about two types of cryptids based off folklore. You are taken on a journey from the swamps of the south to the upper part of the States. The story has no lag areas and keeps you interested. ( )

If you like reading about folklore and strange creatures, this is the book for you.
A quick paced plot line, with real well 'fleshed' out characters who draw you in and keep you wanting more.
Edge of your seats read that is well worth the ride it takes you on. ( )
