A Gem of a Mystery Takes Center Stage ?Walk through Doors to the Past via a new series of historical stories of romance and adventure. Elise Malvern has a habit of letting people down. Her former boyfriend who hoped she'd be his bride. Her grandfather who hoped she'd take over the family's auction company. But mostly she's disappointed herself. What's the point of pursuing her passion as a violinist, if she is too scared to audition for a seat in the Pittsburgh Symphony? Her internship at the elegant Heinz Hall places her in the wings of the stage, but never on it. By accident, she discovers an old stage prop. Her instincts tell her there's more to the paste necklace than meets the eye. Whether a good idea or not, she accepts help from a childhood friend, who happens to be country music megastar--Peirson Brooks. Peirson and Elise share a history; one she doesn't care to repeat. The more involved they become in the mystery, the more things get tangled, including her heart. A century earlier... Sophie Walters longs for center stage, her name on the marquee, and all that jazz, but climbing her way into an acting career is more difficult than she imagined. Having spoiled all her chances in Hollywood, she returns to Pittsburgh, accepting an insignificant role in a popular production. She watches her dreams pass by from behind the curtain at the illustrious Loew's Penn Theatre. She finally gets the coveted spotlight, but not for her talent. No, her surge to fame is all one terrible mistake. Somehow, she's suspected to be a notorious jewel thief known around Pittsburgh as The Mirage. The man she pleads for help is none other than the man she jilted at the altar five years before, Sterling Monroe. This is a great and entertaining story that spans two different centuries, and it will keep you guessing until the very end. The banter and verbal sparring between the main characters will keep you smiling as you read through the emotional drama and light-hearted prose. It is a short and easy-read book, which offers a break from the usual WWII novels and the daily news. I will continue to read this author's books because they are so enjoyable. ( )

In Spotlight and Shadow

This book was simply breathtaking!
I'd say this book definitely is tied with "The Mobster's Daughter" for my favorite book that Rachel has written so far!
(The Mobster's Daughter is my #1 favorite fictional romance read of all time, so this is seriously saying something!)

In Spotlight and Shadow is a lovely split-timeline historical romance and is a clean Roaring Twenties novel, which are honestly pretty hard to find.

Elise and Sophie in their respective decades, were so very relatable, funny and loveable.

The author also did a wonderful job of depicting people of different classes and backgrounds and showing the psychological effects their home life and parents (or lack thereof) had on each of them.

I received a complimentary e-book from the publisher through Netgalley, and was not required to write a positive review.
I'm gladly doing so though!
The thoughts and opinions above are my very own. ( )

“. . .Elise Malvern didn’t just have cold feet, they were frostbitten. Too frozen to run after anything out of her comfort zone.”

In Spotlight and Shadow by Rachel Scott McDaniel is a dual-time story with elements of both romance and mystery. Set in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania both in the 1920s and the present day, this book features actress Sophie Walters and violinist Elise Malvern. The author has blended the two stories well and created some realistic, engaging characters. I enjoyed the character development and the messages of forgiveness, faith, and following your own dreams.

“In the center of life is the word if, but don’t let that keep you from living.”

The historical aspect was interesting, and I appreciated the author’s notes at the end of the book telling a little of the history of the Loew’s Penn Theater and its renovation in the 1970s as the Heinz Hall for the Performing Arts. 4.5 stars

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy from Barbour Publishing. All opinions are my own. ( )

In Spotlight & Shadow by Rachel Scott McDaniel is a work of Christian historical fiction with a dash of romance and mystery. As the 11th book in the Doors to the Past Series, In Spotlight & Shadow explores two different timelines and two sets of individuals whose stories intersect eventually.

In the 1920s, Sophie Walters returns from Hollywood to Pittsburgh after she is unable to succeed at her heart’s desire. She accepts a rather insignificant role in a popular production. Having left Sterling Monroe at the altar five years earlier, she finds herself forced to ask for his help after she is accused of being a notorious jewel thief known as The Mirage.

I love how the role she plays and the crime she is accused of committing are the same. I also appreciate how the author developed the characters of Sophie and Sterling Monroe.

In the present, Elise Malvern dreams of being a violinist with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. But her fear keeps her from pursuing her dream. She has let down the people around, including her grandfather, who wants her to take over the family Auction house, her boyfriend, who wants her to marry him, and most definitely herself. The closest she gets to the stage is as an intern at Heinz Hall. But through a friend’s actions and a mysterious prop discovery at Heinz Hall, she finds herself relying on a childhood friend, Peirson Brooks, who is a Country Music megastar to help her solve the mystery.

I love how the two stories exist independently and then eventually intersect in a way that was both believable and enjoyable So if you enjoy dual timeline stories or ones that include music, check out this book for yourself in order to find out how the story ends.

I received a complimentary copy of this book, but this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own. ( )

I absolutely love this Doors to the Past series of stand-alone, dual timeline books. The beautiful cover captures the glitz and glamour of the 1920’s while also having the mysterious aura that is woven into both stories. I enjoyed both storylines equally and found my self immersed into each. I loved the characters, the history, the under currant of romance, the mystery, and the faith that was subtle but carried importance. We can think we know what direction our lives should take but when God directs our steps it can look completely different in the end. A well written story that ticks all the boxes to keep your attention and a satisfying ending that ties up all the clues into a neat package with a big red bow. Take the time to delve into the pages and step into the past that affects the present. Well researched and great writing style.
I received a complimentary copy from CelebrateLit. The honest review and opinions are my own and were not required. ( )
