"1853. In a city of science, discovery can be deadly. In a time of unprecedented scientific innovation, the public's appetite for wonder has seen a resurgence of interest in mesmerism, spiritualism and other unexplained phenomena. Dr Will Raven is wary of the shadowlands that lie between progress and quackery, but Sarah Fisher can't afford to be so picky. Frustrated in her medical ambitions, she sees opportunity in a new therapeutic field not already closed off to women. Raven has enough on his hands as it is. Body parts have been found at Surgeons Hall, and they're not anatomy specimens. In a city still haunted by the crimes of Burke and Hare, he is tasked with heading off a scandal. When further human remains are found, Raven is able to identify a prime suspect, and the hunt is on before he kills again. Unfortunately, the individual he seeks happens to be an accomplished actor, a man of a thousand faces and a renowned master of disguise. With the lines between science and spectacle dangerously blurred, the stage is set for a grand and deadly illusion."--Publisher.… (mehr)

This was a good installment in the series. It did take me a little while to work up to reading it, and the pace is not as fast as a 21st-century-set mystery, but there was a lot going on: Raven wondering whether it was time for him to leave the nest, as it were, and Fisher becoming interested in mesmerism. The crimes were just the right amount of gruesome: severed body parts and the fear of the resurrection men. I went down a bit of a rabbit hole with the Mackenzie crypt in Greyfriars Cemetery, and now I need to go back to Edinburgh. ( )

Victorian Edinburgh is the centre of development in medical learning and the city is excited by the new phenomenon of mesmerism. Sarah Fisher is fascinated by it and sees it as another area that she can try to work in, Will Raven is more sceptical. Meanwhile Raven is called in when parts of a body are found around the city and possibly linked to both a theatre and to Flint, the moneylender Will has encountered before. However it is also possible that mesmerism is complete sham and maybe everything is actually linked together.
I haven't read the last couple of books but this reminded me of how good the writing team of Ambrose Parry really is. The plots are really tight and whilst not impenetrable they are cleverly put together. The knowledge of 19th century Edinburgh is excellent and this is coupled with the research into medical history and day-to-day practice. Altogether a great historical medical mystery ( )

1853 Edinburgh. It would seem that mesmerism has become an interest of Sarah's, but Raven is not convinced of its practical benefits. And what of the powers of the medium known as Kimble. Meanwhile a human leg has been found in the office of Dr. Cooper. Later more body parts are discovered in the city, which leads finally to an identification and a suspect. But is all that it seems with mediums and mesmerism involved. Raven and Sarah investigate.
An entertaining and well-written historical mystery with its likeable main characters and interesting supporting cast of characters. Another good addition to this enjoyable series. ( )
