There are those - such as Jean-François Six - who have criticised these versions of Thérèse's texts as remaining in thrall to the sentimentalised mythology of the saint which derives from her sisters. But this volume sets out very clearly the separate documents which Thérèse herself wrote alongside a useful apparatus which describes the processes by which they were moulded into the texts which were originally published; and it is not unreasonable for us to trust our own judgement if we use this volume, perhaps alongside an older version of The Story of a Soul, and in conjunction with a revisionist exegesis such as that proposed by J-F Six. This is a volume of very great value to anyone interested in Thérèse, the spiritual visionary; it allows us to place her properly alongside her predecessors, Teresa of Avila and John of the Cross; and there is a newer edition of this volume which was published in 2009, perhaps answering some of J-F Six's concerns.
