I found it to be confusing and quite long-winded and detailed. Although I have read others in this series, I liked the earlier ones better. I received this novel from the publisher and from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. The opinions expressed here are entirely my own. I’ve listened to her read every book in this series until this, the eighteenth adventure of Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes. I missed the audio performance, but I still enjoyed the story. It is fortunate that after the previous 17 books I am practiced at suspending my disbelief. This book takes on the convoluted Holmes family history. It’s a family that includes his son, Damian, Damian’s mixed race daughter, Estelle, and Damian’s fiance. They are all very interesting characters sadly overlooked in the original Conan Doyle stories. Also overlooked by the founding author, the mother of Sherlock and Mycroft Holmes. Their mother ?!? Yes. And an even more unlikely connection to the British Raj. It was fun. ( ) msjudy | Apr 9, 2024 | After spending some time in Transylvania, Holmes and Mary Russell, his wife, set out to spend time with Damien, his wife, and their daughter . When they arrive, they discovered that the Adler family has left following an attempted break-in. Holmes decide to try to learn more about the break-in as well as locate the Adler family. Mary, unfortunately, had sustained a foot injury and cannot travel. She spends her time at the house getting to know the caretakers as well as exploring the house. She discovers a lot of property and information from previous family members who had lived there. Most of it is related to some of Sherlock relatives, especially the artist Horace Vernet. One interesting piece is a silver lamp with a rotating shade. More important, however is a journal found in an old crate which was written by a woman named Lakshmi. The journal is written in an extremely complicated code and Mary sets to work to decipher it. As she deciphers the words, she discovers a lot of the family history. She reads about the repetitive use of names among family members, suicides, children being raised away from their parents, and living in foreign locations. The two stories, looking for the Adlers and learning family history, are intertwined a big secret emerges at the end. THE LANTERN’S DANCE is refreshingly different format, well-written but sometimes a little complicated trying to follow the family history. "Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes, hoping for a respite in the French countryside, are instead caught up in a case that turns both bewildering and intensely personal After their recent adventures in Transylvania, Russell and Holmes look forward to spending time with Holmes' son, the famous artist Damian Adler, and his family. But when they arrive at Damian's house, they discover that the Adlers have fled from a mysterious threat. Holmes rushes after Damian while Russell, slowed down by a recent injury, stays behind to search the empty house. In Damian's studio, she discovers four crates packed with memorabilia related to Holmes' grand-uncle, the artist Horace Vernet. It's an odd mix of treasures and clutter, including a tarnished silver lamp with a rotating shade: an antique yet sophisticated form of zoetrope, fitted with strips of paper whose images dance with the lantern's spin. In the same crate is an old journal written in a nearly impenetrable code. Intrigued, Russell sets about deciphering the intricate cryptograph, slowly realizing that each entry is built around an image-the first of which is a child, bundled into a carriage by an abductor, watching her mother recede from view. Russell is troubled, then entranced, but each entry she decodes brings more questions. Who is the young woman who created this elaborate puzzle? What does she have to do with Damian, or the Vernets-or the threat hovering over the house? The secrets of the past appear to be reaching into the present. And it seems increasingly urgent that Russell figure out how the journal and lantern are related to Damian-and possibly to Sherlock Holmes himself.
