So I read this shortly after finishing the first book and was surprised by how fast I went through it. It is shorter than the first book but still has a good story.

I absolutely loved the character development in this book. We find out a lot about The Emperor and The Son (but not so much about The Thief yet). The Son's journey, in particular, takes centre stage, and it's a rollercoaster of emotions. His growth, struggles, and the choices he makes are both relatable and thought-provoking. His relationship with the red stone and the staff was also interesting. (I also liked the appearance of The Bear).

I enjoyed this book a lot more than the first. I guess it's because it didn't have as many details. This book focuses on the backstories of the main characters. I really found this book hard to put down once I started it. I finished it in about 3 days on my commute to work.

The second instalment of this series not only met but exceeded my expectations. If you enjoyed the first, you will enjoy this one even more. Just so you know, I'm writing this after reading all the books, and I am trying not to give away anything from the next book. ( )
