THIS TIME, IT'S PERSONAL

VX is not a good way to die. So when the President of the United States gets confirmed intelligence that a shipload of the stuff is headed for Florida, he orders that every stop be pulled out. Including bringing in his ultimate weapon: The Kildar.

Heart-sick over the deaths of so many of his followers, former SEAL Mike Harmon, hero of Ghost, Kildar, Choosers of the Slain and Unto the Breach, decides to sit this one out. WMDs headed for the U.S. no longer matter to the newest in an ancient line of mercenary leaders.

But when his best friend and intel specialist both are seriously wounded in an ambush aimed at him, the Kildar gets his gameface on. The terrorists will learn to fear the Ghost all over again.

Set in the Bahamas and Florida, A Deeper Blue is a fast-moving thriller that starts off at a rocket pace and never slows down. The novel proves once again the adage that sometimes it takes bad people to do good things. Fortunately, Mike Harmon is a very bad man.

The Mountain Tigers and their indestructible commander, the Keldara, AKA Mike Jenkins, come to the US to stop a terrorist plot to spread VX gas in Florida. John Ringo's Ghost series is unequaled in military action and constant tension. Terrorists have a multi-pronged approach and Mike has the disadvantage as the infiltrators execute a brilliant plan at a place and moment of their choosing. But the Kildar is the wrong guy to stop once he has his mission set. ( )

Terrorist are smuggling VX into the country. Unfortunately; Mike is distrought over the loss of Gretchen and is trying to pull it back together. Best book in the series to date. Not as overboard with the sexual exploits and a riviting story. ( )

Still grieving Gretchen's death, the Kildar is awash in whiskey and not inclined to get involved in the United States' latest terrorist crisis. But when his team leaders take the job without him and get themselves shot to bits, Mike has no choice but to save the world... again. And like Super Bowl victors, where do heroes end up? Why Disneyland, of course... need I say more?

Terrorists, fast cars, beautiful (young and/or deadly) women, money, guns, and someone to shoot: all the usual elements are here. Unfortunately, at this point the plot is a bit weary, and while the action never slows down, there are simply so many characters in play that there's very little time to focus on any one in particular. Ringo's agenda isn't subtle - bash the idiots in office and their dove-like tendencies - but while the ride is still a thrill, the vehicle is getting a wee bit tired. ( )

This is one of the Ghost series, also called the Kildar series. It's an interesting, and completely fantastic, military fiction piece. I like it, simply because it hits a lot of things I'm interested in (honor, glory, warfare) yet it rankles with it's unwavering support for American policies, if not American politicos. Sometime's it's nuanced in it's understanding, sometimes it's all hoo-ah. ( )
