It took a while to get me into this book. I find it was an ok book, but I just wasn't quite in the head space to enjoy it like it deserves. I look forward to trying to read this again when I will be able to enjoy it more. The world that was build that did get through my fog brain was quite beautiful and I do enjoy the premise of the book in general as well. ( )

Kevin Knabe has created a beautiful world. Not only that, he has created a fantastical world that also comes across as believable. I really enjoyed this book. ( )

A bit too much of a hippie vibe for my tastes. Far too long-winded descriptions of energy flows and chakra points and similar excessive attempts to provide context for magic. It's actually easier to just say this is magic.

The basic worldbuilding seems to be that there are various gods linked to specific ancient greek style elements - earth fire etc - and that the fae races can harness these for minor powers. Relations between humans and far are generally ok. The story opens with a pair of fae twins working for a gardening firm, providing enhanced compost to help the city's produce be more productive. They realise that several ordinary humans have been adversely effected by exposure to the compost and investigate. The backstory to the boss's motivation is added in achronistically which didn't really work, and it's not clear how the rest of the fae learnt about it.

Meh, nothing particularly engaged me in this book, even though it's a sub-genre I'd normally enjoy. All the characters were trite, the worldbuilding superficial and the motivations unbelievable. ( )

While there are many intriguing threads to this story, I really couldn't get into this book. It was heavy on explanation about the magic and world building, so much so that it made it slow going. I didn't connect with the characters, who felt somewhat one dimensional to me. The author did provide the second book as well, but I don't know if I will attempt to read it. ( )
