Words are more powerful than we realize. They have the ability to tear us down or to build us up. They can wound us or heal us. They can bridge time, distance, and social status. They often reveal the status of our hearts. And in The Color of Sky and Stone, Sara Davison uses words to tell a story that encompasses how much words can affect us.

As Tane and Lia meet through letters, they (mostly) tear off their masks and share parts of themselves with each other that they hide from everyone else in their lives. But both of them are, in a way, leading double lives that, once exposed, may destroy the connection between them.

With a dose of danger in both our main characters’ lives, the breather the letters afford the reader are timed just right in this story. And I appreciated that Davison laid out who God is, how much He loves us no matter our past, and how He never leaves us so clearly throughout the book.

If you love suspense with a good helping of romance and faith, this book is for you.

Sara Davison has been one of my favorite authors for awhile thanks to her amazing storytelling and characters that tug at your heartstrings. The Color of Sky and Stone is the first novel in her new In the Shadows series, and she knocked it out of the park with this one. It’s clear that she poured her heart and soul into this one.

There can be such power in words, and this doesn’t ring truer than in the story of Tane and Lia, two lonely souls who find solace in one another through missives alone. At first, I felt like this story was going to be like all of the other romantic suspense novels I’ve read recently, but then there was a shift and I lost myself to the narrative. On the surface these two characters don’t seem like they would go together, yet they are more perfect for one another than meets the eye. Both have to hide behind a facade and not show who they truly are, both playing the parts that were given to them, and it takes these roles to meet someone who sees past the act and straight to the heart.

There is some suspense and moments that are electrifying beyond words. The connection between Tane and Lia is so powerful and palpable that you can feel it reverberating off the pages. Beautiful imagery helps paint a vivid picture as we see two souls traverse their lonely existence apart yet together, and the touch of grace and forgiveness is whispered and woven throughout.

Though there is a satisfying ending there are a few loose ends that need to be addressed, and I cannot wait to read the next book in the series to find out what happens. The Color of Sky and Stone is a very powerful story of two lonely hearts that find one another in the most unlikely way and discover what can happen when you truly let go and trust.
