I had actually forgotten Jasmine Guillory’s trademark of describing delicious food in her stories until I was a couple of pages into this short story. It doesn’t disappoint, with the main character Daisy describing her love for the local bakery in great detail – pies, tarts and croissants. This is the fourth story in the Improbably Meet-Cute series and if you thought the bakery setting was cute, wait until you get to the drama!

Daisy loves her local bakery but she doesn’t love the grumpy baker/owner. He seems to always be glaring at her and when she points out mistakes like an extra pastry in her bag, he can barely look her in the eye. On Valentine’s Day, Daisy is late for her usual treat. It seems the bakery has sold out of treats, but then she’s trapped inside with just the owner. While they are stuck, Daisy finds out that he has resting grumpy face in addition to other truths. It gets steamy fast in these 40 pages!

I did enjoy this book but being pretty much one scenario, one scene it felt too short. There is definitely a connection between the main characters but you have to rely on that there has been a lot of unresolved tension for the story to finish up in bed, or be a fan of instalove. I would have said Daisy was a bit naïve but it really does seem that the hero came across as grumpy. Maybe him just being short/dumbstruck be Daisy would have worked better? It was still fun and contained Guillory’s trademark food and overthinking main characters. I can’t wait for her next full length novel!

Apparently I was destined to only enjoy half of the stories in this collection. This one was again not one that I really enjoyed. It didn't feel like a story just a bunch of rambling. The first like 4 pages are just her going on and on about why she can never go to the bakery again. It's a lot of her misunderstanding his actions and facial cues and taking a personal offense to it. Out of nowhere the story just escalates to basically a hook up. It didn't really feel like we got any type of build up or story. I just found it hard to stay invested or interested in this one at all. ( )

This short story/novella is part of The Improbable Meet-Cute Collection. In this one, Daisy is trapped in a bakery after an earthquake with the owner Harris. She thinks he hates her, but he really has had a crush on her. Their forced proximity helps the truth come to light. I was kind of enjoying this one until the end where they hook-up in his apartment above the bakery. I get that this is a short story and things have to move fast, but this just didn't feel right to me. I think it would have been more fun if they would have been caught kissing in the rubble by a rescue crew, but that's just me. ( )
