Light-hearted romantic comedy that sees modern day witch Gillian (Kim Novak) using her powers to seduce handsome publisher Shep Henderson (James Stewart). The path of modern witchcraft and stolen love don't run smoothly, however. Director Richard Quine delivers a colourful and charming film played out on some great sets, with some first class cinematography. James Stewart and Kim Novak are great in the leads - Stewart is all warmth and charm while Novak is icy and detached. They shouldn't work as a romantic pairing but they have a ton of chemistry between them. Zeige 2 von 2
Julian Blaustein's production of this mildly supernatural romance is as sleek and pictorially entrancing as any romance we've looked at this year. From the atelier of the heroine, who is a dealer in primitive art, to a smoky night club in Greenwich Village, where the local sorceresses and their apprentices play, it is vividly visual and suggestive....Bell, Book and Candle," like the stage play, is only so-so sorcery, but it comes pretty close to magic so far as its color values are concerned. Richard Quine’s direction gets everything possible out of the screenplay and the cast. But with Kim Novak the central figure, the picture lacks the spontaneity and sparkle written in by playwright John Van Druten. The offbeat story is concerned with witches and warlocks (male gender of the broomstick set) operating against today’s world of skepticism and realism. James Stewart is the straight man thrust by chance into a group of people, headed by Novak, where incantations, spells and sorcery are accepted as realities as commonplace as processed foods. Novak literally weaves a spell on Stewart to make him fall in love with her. Ist enthalten inIst eine Adaptation vonHat einen Ergänzungsband

2.5/4 (Okay).
It completely fails as a romance, but it's pleasant enough as a comedy. ( )
