The Squeaker of the House and the Senate Mouse-jority Leader have a big job to do: Miss Tuftmore's second grade class in Moussouri has written Congress with an idea for a law to declare a National Cheese! But in a big country, it's not always easy to get everyone to agree on an important issue.

I think this is a great book to pair with a history lesson. I love that it teaches the differences between the two branches in a kid friendly engaging way! It was super cute to read and I think that the lessons in it are very clear cut and simple which is easy for children to grasp. ( )

In my opinion, "House Mouse, Senate Mouse," is a great book for young readers. One thing I like about this book is that it teaches children about the government in a fun way; by using mice as characters and by putting it in terms that children can understand on a basic level. For example, the first page reads, "America's mice have a government too, with Presidents, Senators, and Congressmice who, Are elected, debate, vote the popular will - It's a Rodent Republic on Capitol Hill." While the setting is clearly a fictional place, it mocks how the United States government is set up and adds a playful spin with the plot of having a second grade classroom write a letter to Congress about how they want to declare a national cheese. Another thing I liked about this book was that the text rhymed on each page which would be appealing for young readers. A page toward the end, for example, reads: "We are city mice, country mice, large mice and small - We like many cheeses - in fact, like them all! But we're Americans first! So now if you please, Let's agree that American is our national cheese!" The clever rhymes can hold reader interest and make the story more fun to read aloud. I also loved the illustrations in this book as well. Each illustration covers the entire page and seems to be a mixture of paints and fine lines. They also have amazing detail and bright colors in the illustrations that make each and every page an attractive addition to the story. The big idea of this story was to teach children about the nation's capitol building and government in a fun and clever way. ( )

Great for grades k-3. Helps children understand politics. The children could draw a picture of the senator.
