2840 In the Time of the Americans: FDR, Truman, Eisenhower, Marshall, MacArthur--The Generation That Changed America's Role in the World, by David Fromkin (read 18 Feb 1996) This is a fantastically good book, and examines in detail the years from 1900 to 1941, and then in broad canvass the years since. It has as its thesis that the men born in the 1880's--FDR, Truman, Eisenhower, Marshall, MacArthur, and others--lived through tremendous changes and America triumphed by reason of their decisions. It is full of interesting tidbits, but its last summary chapters are a delight. How pleasant it is to have a book written about the 1940's and since which knows that the Soviet system would fail. The book is based mostly on secondary sources, but the analysis is very interesting. ( )
