This is essentially a chronicle of her travels on a sailboat along the ancient landmarks and seaports of the ancient Greek empire including it's powerful city states of Athens and Sparta. While a lot of it is focused on the general murder and mayhem unleashed by Athens against it's own city states of Sparta and the Pelopnnesian league. As you may all know, it was the Peloponnesian war that led to the demise of Athens and also the Greek Empire. So Greece can be viewed as a well rounded state, not only did it lay the foundation for all the peaceful aspects of civilization such as Art, Culture, Architecture, Medicine, Statecraft etc. that essentially laid the foundation for western civilization in general. But also it's undesirable aspects of conquests, warfare which was adopted to a large extent by successive Regimes and Despots including the famous Alexander the (not so) Great. It is so strange that this same Greece later went on to become a satellite state of the Ottoman Empire so much so that it's entire culture, including it's cuisine was islamicized and had to be rescued by a plan to bring it back to it's western moorings. Overall, some very strong dose of early Greek History. Zeige 2 von 2 keine Rezensionen | Rezension hinzufügen
Lycia, on the southwestern coast of Turkey, is an ancient land steeped in mystery, myth, and legend. Figured prominently throughout history and literature, Lycia is known as home to the fiery chimera; heartland of worship for the goddess Leto; old ally of Troy; lure to conquering Cyrus and Alexander; and irresistible destination for centuries of travelers, artists, and writers. Part of "The Turquoise Coast", Lycia now attracts more tourists to its glimmering shores than any other partof Turkey. In the early 1950s, following the trail of the ancient Persian and Greek traders, famed travel writer Freya Stark set out by boat to explore the Lycian coast. South from Smyrna, she was guided by traces of Lycia's rich history and cultural heritage. For all those who now follow in her wake, there can be no better, more evocative or knowledgable guide to Turkey's most enchanting coast. Keine Bibliotheksbeschreibungen gefunden. |
