I suspect my rock-star readers in 2nd and 3rd grades will like it. ( ) Boomer and Myrtle are brother and sister. Their father is afraid to leave the house because long ago a tornado came and took away Boomer and Myrtle's mother. Their father used to be an artist and he hasn't made a painting since their mother was swept away. Money is tight and the chef (Who claims he is a Viking by blood and their caretaker at the moment) asks Boomer to go by some fish for dinner. Wen Boomer goes to the docks to buy some fish the fishermen tell him they won't take the money Boomer has but Boomer can Take fish for free from the bucket of devil fish. (In fisherman's terms these are fish that are crazy almost). Boomer pulls out a fish covered in seaweed and puts it in a bag. when Boomer returns he discovers the fish he had taken is a mermaid. Myrtle want's to keep it and Boomer wants to sell it.Later Myrtle breaks out in fuzz and Boomer does ot know what caused it. He looks in the book about mermaids and finds that if you want to keep the baby mermaid you get fuzzy until you can't breathe. The only way to save Myrtle is by returning the mermaid to it's mother. The chef helps and they get the baby to it's mother. Myrtle is saved. I enjoyed this book because the author was a very good author with amazing ideas for problems and solutions. She does not make the solution obvious. The author was very creative with names, and wants of characters. She was descriptive but not too much. She also had a very good rising action and climax. But at the end of the book the falling action fell a little to fast. It ended more with she was saved the end But other than that I hope others enjoy this book to. Boom Broom feels like the universe has it in for him: his mother was swept away by a twister, his father has shuttered himself in the attic, and his sister fakes a new illness everyday in order to stay home and watch game shows. When their viking descended chef/nanny Halvor sends Boom out for some fresh fish for dinner, Boom comes back with a mysterious creature from the reject seafood bucket, which turns out to be a real merbaby. A growling, slimy, spit-uppy, wish-granting merbaby. Boom's sister Mertyle convinces Boom to let her keep the merbaby, and hilarious adventures ensue.
