Biography & Autobiography. Nonfiction. Humor (Nonfiction.) HTML:A memoir in bite-size chunks from the author of the viral Modern Love column You May Want to Marry My Husband.

[Rosenthal] shines her generous light of humanity on the seemingly humdrum moments of life and shows how delightfully precious they actually are. The Chicago Sun-Times

How do you conjure a life? Give the truest account of what you saw, felt, learned, loved, strived for? For Amy Krouse Rosenthal, the surprising answer came in the form of an encyclopedia. In Encyclopedia of an Ordinary Life  she has ingeniously adapted this centuries-old format for conveying knowledge into a poignant, wise, often funny, fully realized memoir.

Using mostly short entries organized from A to Z, many of which are cross-referenced, Rosenthal captures in wonderful and episodic detail the moments, observations, and emotions that comprise a contemporary life. Start anywherepreferably at the beginningand see how one young womans alphabetized existence can open up and define the world in new and unexpected ways.

An ordinary life, perhaps, but an extraordinary book.

Until I read this book, Amy Krouse Rosenthal was known to me only as a children's book author (the really funny, talented author of such gems as [b:Duck! Rabbit!|6124878|Duck! Rabbit!|Amy Krouse Rosenthal|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1266525261s/6124878.jpg|6303340] and [b:Little Oink|6012397|Little Oink|Amy Krouse Rosenthal|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1248106490s/6012397.jpg|6187619]). When I found out she'd written a book for adults, I thought it would probably be as irreverent, amusing and creative as her books for young people. I was right!

Encyclopedia of an Ordinary Life is unlike most other memoirs. It's a reference book about Amy's existence made up of very short entries of completely random Amy-related information. Sometimes it's funny, sometimes poignant. Many times she shares one of those spot-on observations about life that you've never really thought about, but know instantly to be true. For example, from the entry "BOWLING" comes this reflection: "It would be difficult to convince me that leaning has no effect whatsoever on the outcome of my bowling."

The author chronicles tiny tidbits of her thoughts and feelings by category, alphabetically. It is charming and best devoured in small bites, a few entries at a time. From needlepoint to piñatas each topic gives us a snippet into the author’s world.

“Our lives just feel so impossibly big to us.”

“It’s really something to return home after a month away. It would seem that the world should have changed in someway, as it to say, out of courtesy, we understand your journey was illuminating insignificant, and because it affected you so, the universe, two, is making a slight but noticeable shift.”

“I find that I am often moved to tears in my car, alone, listening to music. The combination of the quiet plus music plus cocoonlike detachment plus open-road reflection seems for me to be a potent mix.” ( )

A wonderful, sweet, view askew kind of memoir. Could be corny but avoids it by skilled, sensitive writing and deep underground pools of wisdom. Read this while away from home for two weeks. Its a comfort. And a friend. ( )

Amy and I agree about potato chips, prison escape movies, and much more. A delightful commentary on life and living. ( )
