Good fun for somebody who, like me, likes to lose himself for awhile in points of criticism and interpretation of ancient or other remote history. For me there's a charm to such books. These essays are generally disfigured by the current (and almost parodic) trendy jargon of academia (if it can be called that anymore), but the interest of the subject saves them. Gave me hours of enjoyment, especially the parts about Pausanias' commentators and those who retraced his steps. I'm not quite sure why, but I kept thinking of Norman Cantor's Inventing the Middle Ages. keine Rezensionen | Rezension hinzufügen
Pausanias, the Greek historian and traveler, lived and wrote around the second century AD, during the period when Greece had fallen peacefully to the Roman Empire. While fragments from this period abound, Pausanias' Periegesis ("description") of Greece is the only fully preserved text of travel writing to have survived. This collection uses Pausanias as a multifaceted lens yielding indispensable information about the cultural world of Roman Greece. Keine Bibliotheksbeschreibungen gefunden. |
